  3. 1 Corinthians 13 • I CHALLENGE YOU TO MEMORIZE IT!!! • 271 words.

  4. Jealousy, Envy

  5. Genesis 30:1-5 • When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I'll die!" • (2) Jacob became angry with her and said, "Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?" • (3) Then she said, "Here is Bilhah, my maidservant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and that through her I too can build a family." • (4) So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her, • (5) and she became pregnant and bore him a son.

  6. QUESTION • Q: What are some things we do when we are jealous?

  7. Genesis 37:5-20 • Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. • (6) He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had: • (7) We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it." • (8) His brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

  8. Genesis 37:5-20 • (9) Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. "Listen," he said, "I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me." • (10) When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, "What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?" • (11) His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind. • (12) Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem,

  9. Genesis 37:5-20 • (13) and Israel said to Joseph, "As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them." "Very well," he replied. • (14) So he said to him, "Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me." Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. When Joseph arrived at Shechem,

  10. Genesis 37:5-20 • (15) a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, "What are you looking for?" • (16) He replied, "I'm looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?" • (17) "They have moved on from here," the man answered. "I heard them say, 'Let's go to Dothan.'" So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.

  11. Genesis 37:5-20 • (18) But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. • (19) "Here comes that dreamer!" they said to each other. • (20) "Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams."

  12. QUESTION • Q: What kind of feelings does he have about us?

  13. Genesis 6:6 • The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. • Q: What does it mean to grieve?

  14. Exodus 20:5 • You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

  15. Exodus 34:14 • Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

  16. QUESTION • Q: Do we have jealously among churches in town?

  17. Numbers 11:27-30 • A young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." • (28) Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' aide since youth, spoke up and said, "Moses, my lord, stop them!" • (29) But Moses replied, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD's people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!" • (30) Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

  18. Deuteronomy 4:23-26 • Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the LORD your God has forbidden. • (24) For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. • (25) After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—if you then become corrupt and make any kind of idol, doing evil in the eyes of the LORD your God and provoking him to anger, • (26) I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed.

  19. Deuteronomy 5:9-10 • You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, • (10) but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

  20. Deuteronomy 6:14-15 • Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; • (15) for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land.

  21. Joshua 24:19-22 • Joshua said to the people, "You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. • (20) If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you." • (21) But the people said to Joshua, "No! We will serve the LORD." • (22) Then Joshua said, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD." "Yes, we are witnesses," they replied.

  22. Job 5:2 • Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.

  23. Proverbs 3:31-33 • Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways, • (32) for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence. • (33) The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.

  24. Proverbs 14:29-31 • A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly. • (30) A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. • (31) He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

  25. Proverbs 23:17-18 • Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD. • (18) There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.

  26. Friends??? • Q: Can we pick our friends? What if our friends get overwhelmed with jealousy, envy?

  27. Proverbs 24:1-2 • Do not envy wicked men, do not desire their company; • (2) for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble.

  28. Proverbs 27:4-6 • Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy? • (5) Better is open rebuke than hidden love. • (6) Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

  29. QUESTION • Q: People spend a lot of time being jealous, envious. What do they gain in the end?

  30. Ecclesiastes 4:4 • And I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from man's envy of his neighbor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

  31. Song of Solomon 8:6 • Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.

  32. Nahum 1:2-3 • The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and maintains his wrath against his enemies. • (3) The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet.

  33. Mark 7:17-23 • After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. • (18) "Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him 'unclean'? • (19) For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods "clean.")

  34. Mark 7:17-23 • (20) He went on: "What comes out of a man is what makes him 'unclean.' • (21) For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, • (22) greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. • (23) All these evils come from inside and make a man "unclean.'"

  35. Romans 13:12-14 • The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. • (13) Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. • (14) Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

  36. 1 Corinthians 3:3-6 • You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? • (4) For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men? • (5) What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. • (6) I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.

  37. 1 Corinthians 10:21-24 • You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons. • (22) Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are we stronger than he? • (23) "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is constructive. • (24) Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.

  38. Galatians 5:19-23 • The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; • (20) idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions • (21) and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  39. Galatians 5:19-23 • (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, • (23) gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

  40. Galatians 5:25-26 • Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. • (26) Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

  41. James 3:14-16 • But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. • (15) Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. • (16) For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

  42. 1 Peter 2:1-3 • Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. • (2) Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, • (3) now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
