  1. Education: Initiatives & Opportunities R. Hollow ATNF Outreach Workshop 2 Dec 2004

  2. My Role • Develop educational resources and outreach programs – primarily for high school students and teachers • Teachers Workshops in astronomy • Resources for internet incl NSW HSC Physics • Running innovative educational programs • Coordinate program of public talks by ATNF staff • Develop & promote activities for National Science Week • Support special events such as Open Days • Support outreach efforts at Parkes and Narrabri

  3. Target Groups • Schools • Teachers (key group) • Students • Stages 2-3 (Primary), 4-5 (Yrs 7-10), 6 (Yr 11-12) • Public • Other specific groups • Trainee teachers • Under/Post graduates

  4. Key educational groups • NSW Department of Education and Training • NSW Board of Studies • Australian Science Teachers’ Association • NSW Science Teachers’ Association • Association of Independent Schools • Catholic Education Offices • Australian Government Quality Teacher Program (funding?)

  5. Initial Teacher workshop Initial web focus Relevant Courses

  6. Parkes, May 04, three days for Junior Science teachers Emphasis on practical, “hands-on” activities that teachers can use in classroom. Teachers interact with astronomers & engineers Relate to syllabus outcomes Provide resources Initial Projects:1. Teacher Workshops

  7. Workshop developments • Future workshops for Physics teachers • Regular program of workshops • Rotate location, eg Parkes, Narrabri, + Coonabarabran? Interstate? • One-day or weekend Sydney workshops • Presentations at other events, eg Syd Uni Science Teachers Workshop, STANSW and ASTA conferences. • Participants develop new materials and projects

  8. Initial Projects:2. Online material for HSC Physics • Complete course for Astrophysics option • Integrated into syllabus requirements • Include up-to-date data & images • Content + activities and problems • Mixture of print-outs and online • Ready for May 04. • Extend to other sections of syllabus, eg Cosmic Engine

  9. Other web projects • Case studies of Australian scientists (multi-level). Extensive set of pages linked to relevant science (high need). • Aboriginal astronomy unit for Yrs 7-10 (high need for 2005) • Material for EES & Senior Science • Material for Stage 4-5 Science on eg electromagnetic spectrum and radio astronomy

  10. Public talks • Provide support and education background for speakers • Link with educational authorities and groups

  11. Other tasks • Develop simple printed resources and class kits, eg Crux poster, updated information and activity sheets • Student Research Scheme – work with astronomers to identify suitable projects.

  12. Innovative Programs • Science teachers need better understanding of process of science and research • Teacher Research schemes - Science teachers practising “science” • Eg Teacher Leaders in Research Based Science Education, TRLBSE, an NOAO/NSF scheme • Research Experience for Teachers, RET Program, an NRAO scheme at Socorro and Green Bank • Use Mopra & possibly Siding Spring telescopes?

  13. Innovative programs • Student research schemes – students doing science • CSIRO Student Research Scheme • SEARFE • Eg GAVRT; 32 m ex-DSN dish • Linkages with Faulkes Telescope • Radio observations of meteors • – Bathurst Observatory/CSU

  14. Trainee teachers & educational research • Foster links with Science Teacher trainers, eg UTS, Macquarie, CSU • Provide support/tour/info for trainee teachers and teacher trainers • Utilise trainees for project development • Help them with implementation of schemes in schools

  15. International Perspectives • Foster links with other observatory/education groups, eg NRAO, Jodrell Bank, Gemini, NOAO – avoid reinventing the wheel. • Monitor trends in astronomy education and contribute to dissemination of the research

  16. Key points • Effective programs and resources are those that target syllabus & teacher needs. • Educational trends have moved from content to process, ie not just Science as facts, rather how is it done • Need to integrate skills with content • Must foster links with educational groups and teachers
