  1. Run 2b Schedule Status • Schedule • process • status • Upcoming Major Purchases • Major equipment expenditures in FY03 • Labor and equipment funding for CY03 • Conclusions

  2. Schedule Status Mechanics • Started monthly schedule progress reporting • 1st report: status as of Nov. 20 • 2 week process • 1st week L3 managers give status and monthly reports to L2 mangers. L2 managers status schedule w/ Bill, Vivian • 2nd week project office digests information and reports back to the project • Dates aligned with effort reports/DOE reporting • Next status will be just after the holidays • aligns with effort reporting to allow EV reporting • Project reporting to “aggressive” schedule • project completion data 9/2005 (EIR date 5/2006) • Reporting on % complete method only • still working on EV/COBRA reporting

  3. Shifted silicon milestones These are milestones that have shifted earlier or later compared to Lehman Open - Lehman Closed - Reported

  4. Milestone Status for Silicon • The Good News (milestones completed early) • 1.1.3 • Mechanical Stave prototype (1.1.3.11.4 MS) on or maybe even ahead of schedule! (12/16/02) • Should be finished this week • 1.1.5 Silicon Barrel Assembly • 1.1.5.2.2 prototype silicon cylinders released for production • 1 week ahead of schedule due to prototype z=0 membrane finishing ahead of schedule

  5. Delayed silicon milestones These are milestones that have shifted later compared to Lehman Open Diamonds- Lehman Closed Diamonds- after status reporting

  6. Milestone Status for Silicon • Milestones on our watchlist • 1.1.1 Sensors • L2-L5 sensor production slipped by 1 month due to extra time taken to procure preproduction sensors (1.1.1.4.1.2). • Delay in procurement understood (mainly communication) • Addressing this by having a procurement expeditor watch over large or schedule sensitive procurements • This caused delay of 3 weeks in Milestone 1.1.1.5 - All Silicon sensors delivered • (7/28/04 -> 8/18/04) (some slack in schedule) • 1.1.2 Readout electronics • SVX4 remains critical path to final detector completion • 2nd prototype submission 1/16/03 - on critical path

  7. Milestone Status for Silicon • Milestones on our watchlist • 1.1.3 • L0/L1 structures design (1.1.3.2/1.1.3.3) is behind in % complete but we don’t have an updated projected finish date for the tasks, so it’s hard to understand the impact. This will be fixed in the next month. • Final stave shells and core milestones slipped by 4-5 weeks due to 1.1.4.20.3 - design initial C-channel attachment fixtures taking 1 month longer than expected (now completed) • 1.1.4 Detector Production and Testing • 1.1.4.9.3 Begin 20cm gang production slipped by 1 month due to silicon sensor procurement slippage

  8. Milestone Status for Silicon • Milestones on our watchlist • 1.1.6 Monitoring • Radiation monitoring system slipped nearly 2 months (7/12/04 -> 9/7/04)- • Slip due design delay • Non-critical system • Note that the temperature monitoring system is on schedule

  9. Milestone Status for Silicon • Milestones on our watchlist • 1.1.7 - Software and Simulation • 1.1.7.4.1.7 Release Silicon Unpacking and Translation Packages slipped by 3 months (4/30/03 -> 7/23/03) because no one is working on it (modifying run2a code for data unpacking) • This impacts the multi hybrid full chain test 10/23/03 • 1.1.7.4.2.4 Release Silicon Examine Package slipped by 3 months (6/12/03 ->9/4/03) for the same reason • 1.1.7.6.9 Release Si Calibration Code slipped by the same 3 months (1/26/04 -> 4/15/04) • 1.1.7.7.5 Release Si Monitoring Code slipped same 3 months (1/25/04 -> 4/15/04) • Going to collaboration with this to recruit effort

  10. Item Cost (FY02 k$) Production Start Date L2-L5 Sensors 1,453 03/13/03 L2-L5 Digital Jumper Cables 263 04/03/03 L0 Sensors 161 04/14/03 L1 Sensors 155 04/14/03 Analog Cables 167 07/03/03 SVX4 Production Chips 475 07/11/03 L2-L5 Production Hybrids 382 09/04/03 FY03 Equipment Purchases over $100k All scheduled FY03 equipment purchases over $100k through Sep ’03 Costs do not include contingency, G&A, or escalation. Labor not included.All FY03 procurements over $100k in silicon subproject only.

  11. FNAL Equipment Labor/M&S for Silicon

  12. FNAL R&D Labor/M&S for Silicon

  13. Shifted trigger milestones

  14. Milestone Status for Trigger • Executive summary: • managing to aggressive schedule (complete 2/28/05) • delays in some milestones, but project on schedule • 1.2.1 L1 Calorimeter Trigger • ADC/Digital Filter board now critical path item due to prototype ADF design taking longer than estimated (1.2.1.1.1.1) (new end data 1/24/03) • design more complicated than originally thought • extra engineering added to ensure schedule does not slip further • 1.2.1.1.5 Prototype L1 Cal Trig ADF shipped to FNAL • delayed by nearly 2 months (5/2/03->6/23/03) • 1.2.1.1.3 L1 Cal Trigger ADF Production Complete • delayed by 2 months (12/8/05 - 2/7/05)

  15. Milestone Status for Trigger • 1.2.1 L1 Calorimeter Trigger (continued) • 1.2.1.2.1.5 Cal Trigger ADF+Crate Prototype Complete • delayed by 3 months - delay in starting backplane design • Design engineer focussing on ADF • Conscious priority choice - this is not a critical path item • Trigger Algorithm Board design delay, but final prototype still on schedule (1.2.1.3.1.8) • delay incurred due to rewriting entire suite of sliding windows firmware to allow better simulation • Increased ability to simulate firmware before prototype fabrication means less time needed for prototype testing • 1.2.1.8 L1 Calorimeter Trigger TAB/GAB Production and Testing Complete delayed by 6 weeks (due to ADF delay) • No upcoming major purchases • 1st Major purchase Jan 2004 (ADF parts) $160k

  16. FNAL Equipment Labor/M&S for Trigger Upgrade

  17. Milestone Status for Online • 1.3.2.4.3.5 RAID Array Active • delayed by 1 week due to dealy in commissioning Fiber Channel SAN array (10/18/02 -> 1/22/03). • Note that most of the slack was taken up in reducing testing time for the array.

  18. FNAL Equipment Labor/M&S for Online Upgrade • No upcoming major purchases.

  19. Project Administration • Costs for project administration (s/w licenses, travel, budget officer, admin, scheduler)

  20. Conclusions • Project completion dates have NOT changed • intermediate milestones have moved in both directions • delays understood and addressed • Managing to “aggressive” schedule • completion date Sept 05 • EIR/DOE schedule finish May 06 • Using the project status information • understand impact of shifting tasks • anticipate needs • shaking out the bugs to make this exercise as productive as possible • Flagging schedule changes • Working on Earned Value analysis (via COBRA)
