  1. Rules Updates & Reminders • All required material such as your textbook, pen or pencil, calculator, and paper, must be brought to class EVERY DAY. You will NOT be allowed to leave the class room to get ANY material you are missing. • There will be a material check performed randomly and will be worth Class Work Points. • There will be NO BATHROOM BREAKSduring my class. • Keep the classroom NEAT and ORGANIZED. Put your chairs back if you have moved them and clean up your mess. Not following this rule will earn you a Lunch Detention. Repeat offenders will have an After School Detention! • Messy work or will NOT be accepted! All turned in work must be neat and organized with a proper HEADING on an A4 size lined paper with NO SPIRAL EDGES! Work that is extra neat can earn Bonus Points. • Late home work is NOT ACCEPTED. • Copying or “working together” is NOT ALLOWED unless approved by me in advance! If I notice similar mistakes on your work, you and the person the paper is similar to will NOT receive credit. • If you are absent, your absence must be excused by the school in order to make up your work. You will have ONE DAY per day missed to make up work. • Also, if you are absent, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to follow up on work missed. See me or a class mate to find out what you have missed. I will NOT contact you or remind you of missed work. Work that is not made up in time will receive a ZERO.

  4. Grades • DON’T ask for a grade increase. • I don’t “GIVE” grades, YOU earn them! • Keep in mind every time you were 1-2% away from a letter grade, and you have not been turning in your home work or have not been accurately completing them, THAT was the 1-2% YOU could have given yourself. • Work hard and you will get what you deserve.

  5. Upcoming Assessments

  6. Review of Section 5-5

  7. Section 5-6 Using coordinate geometry and deductive reasoning to verify some properties of polygons.

  8. Verifying Properties with Coordinates • We can use the coordinates of a rectangle in STANDARD POSITION to show that the diagonals of every rectangle have the following properties: • A. The diagonals are equal in measure. • B. The diagonals have the same midpoint.

  9. We use the following formulas to find A and B • A. The diagonals are equal in measure: • We use the distance formula and find the length of each diagonal and compare. • B. The diagonals have the same midpoint: • We use the midpoint formula and find the midpoints and compare. See page 281 for example.

  10. Diagonals of Special Quadrilaterals • In a parallelogram, the diagonals have the same midpoint. • In a Kite, the diagonals are perpendicular to each other. • In a rectangle, the diagonals are equal in measure. • Note* Every special quadrilateral shares the properties of the family of quadrilaterals to which it belongs. For example, a rhombus is a kite and a parallelogram. As you saw above, its diagonals are going to be perpendicular and have the same midpoint.

  11. Parallelograms • In a parallelogram, opposite sides are equal in measure.

  12. Answer the following questions on your notes Name all special quadrilaterals that have each property. • The diagonals have the same midpoint. • The diagonals are perpendicular to each other. • The diagonals are equal in measure. • Opposite sides are equal in measure.

  13. Answers: Name all special quadrilaterals that have each property. • The diagonals have the same midpoint: Parallograms, rectangles, rhombuses, squares. • The diagonals are perpendicular to each other: Squares, kites, rhombuses. • The diagonals are equal in measure: Rectangles, squares. • Opposite sides are equal in measure: Parallelograms, rectangles, rhombuses, squares.

  14. Properties of Triangles • In a triangle, a segment that connects the midpoints of two sides is parallel to the third side and half as long. MN = ½ PR

  15. Properties of Triangles • Place the triangle in standard position. • Use convenient coordinates. Finding midpoints involves dividing by 2, so use variable coordinates that are multiples of 2 • Find and label the midpoints. • Find each slope. [The slopes must be parallel] • Find the length of each segment. [The length of one segment needs to be half of the other] See page 283

  16. Assignments • Class Work Page: 284 – 285 [#s 1-5; 8-10;] ALL • Home Work Worksheet 5.6 ALL – Due Thursday
