  1. Summary status update SPIRE Consortium meetingLa Palma, 1-3 October 2008 Göran L. PilbrattHerschel Project Scientist, Herschel Science CentreESA Research and Scientific Support Department(& A.P.Marston)

  2. In last few months…. • Mechanical testing – acoustics & vibration – completed

  3. In last few months…. • Mechanical testing – acoustics & vibration – completed • PACS blue bolometer irregularity

  4. PACS bolometer irregularity • PACS blue phot subarrays 5 & 6 • Found after acoustics • Going to shaker delayed for investigations • Open circuit in single address line can explain • Problem in the warm harness! (neither in FPU nor WE) • Connector problems – fixed!

  5. In last few months…. • Mechanical testing – acoustics & vibration – completed • PACS blue bolometer irregularity • Superfluid production and top-up • Took longer than planned • ‘Learning’ how to top-up He-II • Empty HOT • Contaminated helium (dewar) • IST 2 in He-II • Instrument tests in He-II • SFTs, SPTs, EMC • Incl PACS H-field testing => warm harness rerouting on CVV • RMS • Ventline blockage before RMS • SOVT-1 • Directly after RMS, low(ish) helium filling level for SOVT • Short hold times for cooler recycling for both PACS & SPIRE.

  6. Full 5 days of simulated routine-phase operations (6-10 Sept). Simulation dates of 3-7 December. NO safe modes encountered – one failure of FDIR. Full flow of data: AOTs  PSF  MPS POS MOC MTL  S/C (in DTCP)  MOC  HSC (propagation)  ICCs  NHSC DP Pipeline  HSA  Astronomer Retrieval Report now available – second iteration (nearly 300 pages). Includes report sections supplied by all ICCs. SOVT-1

  7. SPIRE PSW large scan map. Level 2 product visualisation.

  8. In last few months…. • He-II top-up after SOVT – went fairly well • Coping with oscillations • Launch autonomy – successfully completed. • Remarks regarding remaining hardware issues • HIFI LOAA heated baffle • Old, new old, new new => new new design being built • Integrated in the last weeks. • Telescope alignment => several measurement campaigns • Final report and TRB couple of weeks ago – aligned! • Also s/c alignment (thrusters, reaction wheels, etc) • PACS H-field • Rerouting of harness on CVV

  9. Schedule – AIV v8.9.3 * Activities to come • Launch autonomy test just finished • Partial warm-upend Sep – end Oct • Helium depletion • Warming to 100 K – OK for air decontamination • Various parallel work to minimize schedule impact, incl. PACS harness re-routing and HIFI LO radiator. • TB/TV test (in LSS) end Oct – mid Dec • IFARs end Oct • SOVT-2 early Jan • FAR early Dec – mid Jan • Transport to Kourou (by air) late Jan • Launch campaign late Jan – early Apr • Launch early Apr

  10. Herschel launch window

  11. Launch • Launch in 2009 from Kourou • Using an Ariane 5 ECA • Shared with Planck • Now in April

  12. Target visibility
