  2. Overview • Modem is short for modulator-demodulator • Device that is connected to a computer • Transmit data through telephone or cabal lines • Modulates signals of analog types for coding • Demodulates the signals to decode the information

  3. Special Terms/Acronyms • Modulator – transmits signals out a phone line in analog form • Demodulator – receives signals from a phone line turning them back to digital forms • ISP – Internet Service Provider • Mpbs – Mega bits per second • Bpbs – Bits per second • ADSL – Asymmetric digital subscriber line

  4. Product History • Digital modems developed in the 1950s • Commercial Modems came into existence in the 1960s • late 1970s, modems had speeds of 300bps • 300bps equivalent to 0.000286102295 Mbps • The 56K modem was invented by Dr. Brent Townshend in 1996. • Average internet speed in 1st world countries is 40.65 Mbps

  5. How a modem works • Computer needs a modem to modulate digital signals • This will travel down phone lines • They then pass through a second modem • This will demodulate the signals back to the ISP

  6. Specifications • Many different types of modems • Ex: USB modems, wireless modems, fax modems, direct connect modems, and on board modems • Speed is measured by Mbps • Speed of modems vary • Majority of providers support 30 Mbps with 1-6 mbps of bandwidth capacity

  7. Future Trends • Cisco major modem company in the market • Latest Linksys EA6500 released march 2013 • Very stylish and thin design • Highest commercial performance ever • Approximately $245.00

  8. Additional Information • http://www.speedtest.net to test your own modem speed • Linksys is rated in the top 10 best modem company in the world (#1 is D-Link) • Dr. Brent Townshend was Canadian • Careers in the Modem Field: • Modem DSP Engineer • Wireless Modem Hardware Engineer • Modem System tester
