This overview of World War I highlights its inception, key events, and the resulting consequences. It begins with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip and outlines the declarations of war from major powers. The conflict, marked by trench warfare and advanced military technology, involved the Allies—Russia, Britain, and France—against the Central Powers—Austria, Germany, and Hungary. The U.S. joined in 1917 under Woodrow Wilson's leadership. The war, lasting 1,500 days, ended with an armistice on November 11, 1918, resulting in over 9 million deaths and the collapse of four empires.
