  1. Ukraine • On the 24th of August, 1991, Ukraine proclaimed its independence. • Nowadays Ukraine is a sovereign, independent, democratic, social and legal state.

  2. Ukraine. Geography and People • Territory:Ukraine is located in southeastern Europe, bordering on Belarus, Russia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Poland, and Slovakia. In the south, Ukraine is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The total length of the frontiers is 6,500 km, including 1,050 km of sea frontiers. • There are 24 regions and Autonomous Republic of Crimea in Ukraine

Population: • 49.5 million (2001) • 46% male and 54% female; • 35.1 million urban and 16.6 million rural; • density: 87 persons per sq. km. • Ukraine is inhabited by representatives of 128 nations, nationalities, and ethnic groups. Ukrainian is considered mother tongue by 66.3%, and Russian by 31.3%. English is the most popular foreign language.

  13. Climate of Ukraine • The climate of Ukraine is mostly temperate continental. A subtropical Mediterranean climate is prevalent on the southern portions of the Crimean Peninsula. The average monthly temperature in winter ranges from -8° to 2° C (17.6° to 35.6° F), while summer temperatures average 17° to 25° C (62.6° to 77° F). Precipitation generally decreases from north to south; it is greatest in the Carpathians, where it exceeds more than 1500 mm (58.5 in) per year, and least in the coastal lowlands of the Black Sea, where it averages less than 300 mm (11.7 in) per year.

As stated in the Constitution: "Ukraine is a sovereign and independent, democratic, social, legal State.“ • Official language: Ukrainian. • Symbols of State: State Flag, Coat-of-Arms, and National Anthem. • President of Ukraine: The President of Ukraine is the Head of State, Chief of the Executive Branch and acts on behalf of the State.

  16. Historical and Cultural Places in Ukraine • Ukraine is a country of ancient history and of the richest culture, so there are many places of historic and cultural value, our pride and wealth.

  17. St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery • St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery is a functioning monastery in Kiev. Originally built in the Middle Ages by Sviatopolk II Iziaslavych.

  18. Customs & Traditions in Ukraine • There are many customs and traditions in Ukraine. Many of them are connected with religious holidays as periods of transition from one type of agricultural activity to another.

  19. Christmas in Ukraine • It is a red-letter day in the calendar. Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January. • The evening before Christmas is called a Holly Evening. Holly Evening or Swiata Vetcheria is the central tradition of the beautiful Christmas Eve celebrations in Ukrainian homes. When the children see the first Star in the eastern evening sky, which symbolizes the trek of the Three Wise Men, the Sviata Vetchera may begin.

  20. Christmas in Ukraine • After the dinner for the memory of the Christmas den (vertep) singers go with their “vertep” and the “star”. They thing Christmas religious songs-Carols-which glorify Christ’s life from his birthday.

  21. Easter • Easter – the Great holiday, the main Orthodox holiday (catholic people consider Christmas the first holiday). That day the soul is delivered to fill with fair hopes. • There is a great amount of Easter entertainments. The most well known is “navbytky” game (children choose “krashanky” (Easter eggs) and they beat one egg of another). • Our relatives come for dinner and we exchange colored egg.

  22. Easter • We have Ukrainian Easter bread, or paska. It is a tall, cylindrical loaf, usually decorated with extra dough and glazed with egg. • There are many kind of colored eggs or pysanku in different region or the country.

  23. Traditional Ukrainian Food • There are many tasty dishes in Ukraine which are different from all Europe cuisine. The cuisine of Ukraine is based on traditional Ukrainian recipes, but also has influences of its neighbours' cuisines like Russian & Polish Meat (especially pork), potatoes, vegetables, fruit, mushrooms, berries & herbs play a major part.

  24. Borsch • Borsch— vegetable soup (most common form made with beets), popular among eastern Slavic nations. There are more than thirty regional recipes for cooking Borsch, often with meat).

  25. Korovai • Korovai - a round, braided bread, similar to the kolach. It is most often baked for weddings and its top decorated with birds and periwinkle.

  26. Varenyky • Varenyky— boiled dumplings, usually filled with potatoes, cabbage, cheese, or seasonal fruits, topped with butter and sugar or shkvarky (fried bits of salo and onions), accompanied with sour cream.

  27. Syrnyky • Syrnyky— cottage cheese fritters, sometimes with raisins.

  28. Pampushky • Pampushky — fried, rich sweet dough similar to doughnut holes. Frequently tossed with cinnamon sugar. Pampushky (pl., singular is pampusho'k) can also be filled with poppy seed or other sweet fillings.

  29. Ukrainian National Clothes • National clothes still can be seen around Ukraine. Especially at some significant events of people's life: weddings, baptizing, folk festivals, some official ceremonies. To wear it is more typical for rural areas. Especially popular this kind of clothes is in West Ukraine.

  30. Central and Eastern Ukraine • In the Central and Eastern parts of Ukraine, clothes usually consists of geometric forms and plant ornaments. The color range of the motifs is very delicate and very diverse as to individual details. In the Poltava Region, the colors usually include pale blue, white, light ochre, pale green and gray tones.

  31. Western Ukraine • In Western Ukrainian, especially the Hutsul region, in clothes are used geometric ornament and a sharply contrasting palette.

  32. North of Ukraine • In the northwest and clothes traditions preserve relatively intact from the oldest of times. Red,red-blue and red-black were the predominant color schemes in the archaic geometric clothes, executed primarily in dense rows of a horizontal needle-weaving stitch (called “zavolikannia”) that created horizontal bands of patterns reminiscent of weaving. Floral motifs are also popular.

  40. First City Gymnasia • FCG is one of the oldest education establishments in Ukraine. FCG was founded in 1880 as a gymnasium for boys.
