  2. GENERAL INFORMATION about UKRAINE • Location: Eastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea. Border countries: Belarus 891 km, Hungary 103 km, Moldova 939 km, Poland 428 km, Romania (south) 169 km, Romania (west) 362 km, Russia 1,576 km, Slovakia 90 km. • Area: 603,700 sq km (233,090 sq miles) • Population: 45,6 million people • Capital: Kiev • Main cities: Kharkov, Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Odessa, Lvov, Zaporozhe, Lugansk • Main exports: Military equipment, metals, pipes, machinery, petroleum products, textiles, agricultural products • Major trading partners: EU, CIS, China, US. • GNI per capita: US $3,120 (World Bank, 2011) • Constitutional form: Presidential Parliamentary Republic • Head of State: President Mr. Viktor Yanukovych

UKRAINIAN NATURAL RESOURCES: • Most of Ukraine consists of fertile plains (steppes) and plateaus, mountains being found only in the west (the Carpathians), and in the Crimean Peninsula in the extreme south • Main rivers: Dnepr, South Bug, Danube • Biggest water reservoirs: Kremenchuk, Kakhovka, Dneprodzerzhinsk, Kiev, Kanev water reservoirs • Mineral resources. Ukrainehas the largest manganese-ore fields and the second-largest mercury deposits in the world. It also has access to other abundant mineral resources, such as coal, iron, nickel, uranium.. The reserves of sulfur are the largest in the world, the reserves of mercury ore are the second largest. Also more than 5% of world reserves of iron ore are concentrated in Ukraine. • Ukraine is rich in building materials (granite, marble, labradorite, chalk, marl, sandstone). • Ukraine has 311 000 sq. km of arable land, the largest such area in Europe. Rich black soil (2/3 of land resources of Ukraine)

Ukrainian industry in general • Major industries: Coal, electric power, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, machinery and transport equipment, chemicals, agriculture, food-processing (especially sugar). • In the volume of Ukrainian industrial production mining industry accounts for 11,1%. • Ukrainian chemical industry produces large amounts of coke, mineral fertilizers, and sulfuric acid. Ukrainian food-processing industries yield granulated sugar and meat, fruit, and dairy products. • Light industry and consumer goods sectors of Ukraine are underdeveloped in comparison to its heavy industry and agriculture.

Exports – Imports in 2012 • In 2012, Ukrainian exports barely grew as foreign demand visibly cooled due to slowing global economic activity. • During the first ten months of 2012, exports inched up by 2.8% yoy as overseas shipments of nonferrous metals (23% of all exports) declined by nearly 15% yoy. • Imports are showing signs of weakness as well – in January - October, imports grew by 4.4% yoy; however, they still increased faster than exports. Thus, the trade in goods deficit continued to widen and stood at $12.8 billion at the end of October or up from $11.4 billion a year ago. As a result, the current account deficit has been expanding at a faster pace in 2012. • In 10 months 2012 exports from Belgium to Ukraine increased by 41,5%.
