  1. The Beginnings of Agriculture

  2. -(C.) 10,000 B.C.E. human beings in some parts of the world began to experience major changes in their way of life.- During this time people realized that they could grow their own food and domesticate animals.-This period of time is known as the Neolithic Era, or New Stone Age.

  3. -This term recognizes the new types of stone tools that people began using during this time; however, the major change in human life during the Neolithic was the shift to food production.-This shift is called the Agricultural Revolution/Neolithic Revolution.

  4. -After the end of the last Ice Age, new plants began to grow in some areas. Over time, people learned to depend on and grow these plants for food. This shift from food gathering during the Paleolithic to food production during the Neolithic was truly revolutionary.

  5. -In time, people learned to make plants and animals more useful. -The process of changing plants or animals to make them more useful to humans is known as domestication.-The domestication of plants went hand in hand with the planting of seeds. By developing agriculture, or farming, humans made plants more useful and changed human society forever.

  6. -By domesticating animals, hunters no longer had to follow herds. They had sheep and goats for milk, food, and wool. They could also use larger animals to carry heavy loads and pull large farming tools.Question-Why are these things revolutionary? What would be the effect of domestication?

  7. -The Neolithic Revolution brought huge changes to people’s lives. With a stable food supply (surplus), people could focus on other activities. (Specialization of labor)-Also, as people started raising crops and animals and controlling their food supply, people needed to stay in one place. This caused populations to grow and caused people to make permanent settlements.
