History • Aluminum cans are a modification of the steel and tin can that was first developed during The Civil war to store food for troops • Aluminum first began being used in 1960 for concentrated juices • Pull tabs came about in the 1970s, but were replaced in the 1990’s with the current “pop top” design used today

  3. Innovations • Aluminum cans have become lighter than they used to be • Plastic liners inside the cans keep the drinks from tasting like the can • Pop tops make the need for a can opener non-existent for these types of cans

  4. Positive Impacts • Aluminum is cheaper than steel • Aluminum is corrosion-resistant • Aluminum is easily recyclable

  5. Negative Impacts • Soda and beer in aluminum cans is cheaper and can be a contributor to poor health if consumed in excess • Environmental impact from discarded cans if not recycled
