  1. North Carolina History Lesson 4 – Today we will learn about the different points of view from: Explorers and Settlers 2. Native Americans 4th Grade Ms. Lewis

  2. European Point of View • The settlers wanted to find a new place to live: • Land that they could stay and claim for England so that England would be bigger. • The settlers wanted to find their own food and grow their own crops. • They wanted to build their own houses.

  3. European Point of View (2) • Some of the settlers wanted to be friends with the Native Americans, while others did not trust them and didn’t want anything to do with them. • The weapons that the settlers brought with them from England were very different than those that the Native Americans had.

  4. European Point of View (3) • The Native Americans had bows and arrows and tomahawks, all hand-made,while the settlers had guns and knives. These weapons didn’t compare when they were in a fight with each other. Guns were too powerful.

  5. Native American Point of View • The Native Americans thought that it was their Land, since they had been living there for so long. It was not fair of the settlers to come in and take it from them. • It was difficult to communicate since the tribes all spoke different languages and the settlers spoke something different as well.

  6. Native American Point of View (2) • The Native American’s thought it was not nice of the settlers to try to take their food source. The settlers would hunt and fish the same animals as the Native Americans and it would mean less food for the Native Americans and their families.

  7. Native American Point of View (3) • Because the Native Americans were never exposed to the same germs as the settlers when they came to their land they brought their germs that caused new diseases for the Native Americans. As a result, many of them got sick and died.

  8. Native American Point of View (4) • The Native Americans had many traditions that were different than the Europeans. What they valued was very different than the English intruders. • The Native Americans did not have money, if they wanted something from another tribe or person they would trade something for it.
