  2. Why is it important? • The constitution for North Carolina is important because it helps give all the people in North Carolina the rights that they all deserve. • It also helps the government to know how to do their jobs and help the people.

  4. North Carolina Constitution – Preamble We, the people of the State of North Carolina, grateful to Almighty God, the Sovereign Ruler of Nations, for the preservation of the American Union and the existence of our civil, political and religious liberties,

  5. North Carolina Constitution – Preamble (cont) • and acknowledging our dependence upon Him for the continuance of those blessings to us and our posterity, do, for the more certain security thereof and for the better government of this State, ordain and establish this Constitution.

  7. What does it mean? • We, the people of the State of North Carolina – These are the people that live in North Carolina and call it home.

  8. What does it mean? • grateful to Almighty God, the Sovereign Ruler of Nations – they are appreciative to God that they can be free and call North Carolina their home.

  9. What does it mean? • For the preservation of the American Union – to make sure that America stays together (united).

  10. What does it mean? • and the existence of our civil, political and religious liberties – that we would have freedom to work together, vote and be involved in government, and choose our own religion.

  11. What does it mean? • and acknowledging our dependence upon Him for the continuance of those blessings to us and our posterity – Recognizing that we are thankful for the blessings that we have for • ourselves and our • family.

  12. What does it mean? • …do, for the more certain security thereof – to make sure that we are safe as a state.

  13. What does it mean? • and for the better government of this State – that our state will have good government.

  14. What does it mean? • ordain and establish this Constitution – decree and start this agreement.
