  1. Cosmetology Hair Types

  2. Hair Type 1 - Straight • No curl or wave • Industrial strength • Has great shine • Won’t curl • More oily than dry • More cuticle layers • Harder to damage Cosmetology I: Hair Types

  3. Hair Type 1 - Straight • Hair Subtype 1A -Fine and thin -Super soft with a high octane shine -Often difficult to deal with • Hair Subtype 1B -Medium texture -Has a lot of body • Hair Subtype 1C -Coarse -More resistant to curling and shaping • Examples of Type 1 hair -Cher and Helen Hunt Cosmetology I: Hair Types

  4. Hair Type 2 - Wavy • Falls between type 1 straight and type 3 curly • Wavy hair tends to be coarse and has a definite “S” pattern. • Your hair is a type 2 or wavy if it curls in the “S” shape while laying flat against the scalp. • Often confused with type 3 hair. • Sticks close to the scalp. Cosmetology I: Hair Types

  5. Hair Type 2 - Wavy • Type 2A -Fine and thin -easy to handle -can easily be blown straight or take on the curlier look • Type 2B; Medium-Textured • Hair Subtype 2C -Thick and coarse -Usually more resistant to styling and have a tendency to frizz • Examples of Type 2 hair -Yasmeen Ghauri, Isabell Rossellini, and Jennifer Aniston Cosmetology I: Hair Types

  6. Hair Type 3 - Curly • Definite loopy “S” pattern • Looks like a stretched out slinky if pulled out • Often thought of as being coarse, but usually is baby soft and very fine in texture • Just a lot of it • Is not shiny as straight or wavy hair because cuticle layers do not lay flat. • Usually straightens out when wet, but as it dries, it absorbs moisture and contracts to the curly state. Cosmetology I: Hair Types

  7. Hair Type 3 - Curly • Humidity makes curly hair curlier or even frizzier • Lot of body • Easily styled in natural curly state • Easily straightened with a blow dryer • If healthy, it is shiny with soft smooth curls and strong elasticity • If damaged, it is usually frizzy, dull, hard, dry Cosmetology I: Hair Types

  8. Hair Type – 3 Curly • Type 3A -Very loosely curled -shiny with big curls -the shorter the straighter it gets -the longer, the more defined curls Examples of type 3A hair -Julia Roberts, and Susan Sarandon • Type 3B -Medium amount of curl -from bouncy ringlets to corkscrew -you could find both sub-types on the same head Examples of type 3B hair -Nicole Kidman, Shirley Temple, and Cree Summer Cosmetology I: Hair Types

  9. Hair Type 4 - Kinky • Very tightly curled • Very wiry, tightly coiled, very fragile • Appears to be coarse, but actually quite fine with lots and lots of thin strands packed together. • Healthy; won’t shine, but has shine • Soft and feels silky • Looks tough and durable, but looks can be deceiving Cosmetology I: Hair Types

  10. Hair Type 4 - Kinky • Most fragile because of fewer layers • Has less natural protections from damage • Curling irons and chemicals breaks down cuticle, robbing hair of moisture • Will eventually snap and break • Women with this hair type often rely on relaxers Cosmetology I: Hair Types

  11. Hair Type 4 - Kinky • Sub-type 4A -tightly coiled -when stretched it has a “S” pattern -more moisture than type 4B B. Sub-type 4B -has a “z” pattern -less of a defined curl -instead of curling or coiling, it beads in sharp angels like the letter Z -wiry texture Examples of type 4 Hair -Oprah, Whoopi Goldberg, Angela Bassett Cosmetology I: Hair Types
