  1. Bell Ringer #11 – 9/28/10 Open your book to page 57. Read about life at Jamestown, one of the first English colonies in America. List 3 facts about Jamestown.

  2. St. Augustine, Florida • Oldest city established by Europeans with the U.S. Settled by the Spanish in 1565.

  3. Roanoke Colony • Around 1586 a group of English colonists created Roanoke, Virginia. • After 3 years w/o British supplies, no colonists were found in Roanoke. • Known as the “Lost Colony” • http://www.history.com/videos/life-in-jamestown#in-search-of-history-lost-colony-of-roanoke

Jamestown, Virginia • First permanent English settlement • Named for England’s King James, who signed the “Charter of 1606” to allow a Virginia colony. • 100 men arrived in 1607; many starved to death • http://www.history.com/shows/america-the-story-of-us/videos/life-in-jamestown#life-in-jamestown

  5. Jamestown People • John Smith – elected as president • Powhatan – friendly American Indian tribe that helped the English learn how to fish and to grown corn (new crop to the English) • Pocahontas – 12 y.o. daughter of Powhatan chief. Threw herself over John Smith’s body when he was captured. Converted to Christianity and married colonist John Rolfe.

  6. Tobacco • The Spanish brought it to Europe from America in the 1500s and pipe-smoking quickly became popular in Europe • Indentured Servants – settlers brought to Jamestown to work the tobacco fields. Free trip to America in exchange for years of servitude. • In 1622 Indians attacked Jamestown and killed 350 people. They were angry that tobacco fields were taking up their lands.

  7. The Mayflower • Pilgrims took the Mayflower in 1620 to Plymouth, Massachusetts. They left England for religious freedom. • Mayflower Compact – document to maintain order. Gave male church members control of the colony

  8. Plymouth Colony • Pilgrims were “Purists” – didn’t like elaborate churches and clothes. Wanted “purity”. • Squanto – Indian who spoke English and helped the Pilgrims
