  2. As you approach this dramatic fairy tale medieval chateau in Mervent, Vendee via the private driveway your breath will be taken away. The chateau is in a stunning location straight out of a history book. Across from the large parking area you arrive at the stunning moat which surrounds the chateau on all sides, cross the bridge and enter via the portcullis into the calm serene courtyard.

  3. Perfectly manicured lawn and beds full of beautiful flowers, you will be amazed at the size of the building which greets you on three sides. The fourth side is mature forest which surrounds the chateau and keeps it totally private. On the far left side of the U shaped chateau, there is a private owners house, with its own enclosed garden, comprised of sitting room, kitchen and downstairs storage and toilet. Upstairs are two very large double bedrooms and a large family bathroom with twin sinks and a separate toilet. This part of the building is totally renovated and has under floor heating and all modern conveniences and is ready to move into.

  4. Attached to the owners house you enter via a wine store/cave what could be a two-bedroom house, it was a holiday rental many years ago but needs a total overhaul, it has its own separate entrance. The bottom of the U is divided by the portcullis gate. On the left side is a garage and on the right size is a stunning vaulted room which has been the venue for many weddings This room was totally renovated in the mid 1980’s by the Monuments Historic of France, the whole vaulted ceiling was redone, under floor heating was installed and a clever drainage system was installed under the building to take any ground water away into the moat.

  5. Restaurant The final side of the U shape houses what was a successful creperie restaurant run by the current owners before their retirement. It has a terrace, bar, large bread oven, a kitchen and storeroom. The owners also hold a Licence IV, a valuable full drinks licence which are hard to come by in France.

  6. The back of this building houses was probably the suite of the original lord and lady who built the chateau. There is a beautiful room with a dual aspect overlooking the moat, it has a large stone fireplace and its own entrance. Up a flight of stone steps is the piece de resistance - a stunning bedroom with a huge arched ceiling, also with a fireplace. In 1983 renovation work was done on the ceiling.
