  2. Today we will learn about the Customary units of measure for length. The system of measurement used in the United States is called theCustomary systemof measurement. Customary units of measurement are the non-standard units. Non-standard units of measure give approximate dimensions of an object. Like, we can say that: The desk is as long as 6 of my hands.   4. History Let us see the history of discovery of units of measurement. The Egyptians have evidence that proves that they may be the earliest civilization that discovered a standard unit for length. The Greeks used the width of 16 fingers to find one foot. CONFIDENTIAAL

  5. The Romans adopted the foot from the Greeks and divided it into 12 sections which was calledUNICAE, which came to be known as aninch. The yard was adopted by King Henry I in the 12th century. Many years ago, the US accepted this standard of measurement from London into our customary system. CONFIDENTIAAL

  6. Everyday objects are used as units of measure. It can be used to measure length, height and width. LENGTH: is a measure how long something is from end to end. • For example: • The length of my arm is 18 inches. CONFIDENTIAAL

  7. HEIGHT: The measurement of distance from bottom to top. • For example: • Her height is 68 inches. WIDTH: The measurement of distance from side to side. • For example: • The width of the stripe is 2 inches. CONFIDENTIAAL

  8. Explore Customary Length to ¼ inch. • An inch (in.) is used to measure short lengths in the customary system. • You can use a ruler, yardstick or tape to measure in inches.   9. STEP 2: Measure the object to the closest inch. Use half-inch marks to help you decide which inch mark is closest to the end of the object.
