Objectives • Explain the roles of leaders and followers. • Demonstrate the qualities of effective team members. • Identify the types of leadership.
Terms to Know • Team – group of people organized around a common goal. • Leader – a person who influences the behavior of others • Follower – a person who supports a group by helping put goals into action.
Qualities of Effective Team Members • Put the interest of the team first. • Always emphasize “we” instead of “me” • Keep open minds and are willing to discuss ALL ideas. • Pay close attention when others speak.
Types of Leaders • Autocratic • Demands the cooperation of others • Has full control of the group • Stresses meeting goals • Democratic • Members vote on what to do • Members encouraged to participate • Stresses the needs and wishes of individuals • Laissez-faire • Members do whatever they want • Leaders play down roles in group • Leaders serve as a resource to the group • May not reach goals
