  3. Which is a globe and which is not? What’s the difference?

  4. The Earth • Third planet from the sun. • An actual object in space. • Visible from aerial photographs.

  5. A Globe • A representation of an actual object. • A spherical model of the planet Earth. • Can easily fit in your classroom and be held within your hands.

  7. Map Key or Legend • It helps you find things on the map. • It will show what the various symbols or colors stand for.

  8. Compass Rose • Shows the cardinal directions. • North • South • East • West • Use the compass to write or follow directions. • It will help you know which direction you are headed when traveling.

  40. Now, let’s review for a test. • What is a MAP KEY? • It shows you what the symbols on the map represent. • What is the difference between a GLOBE and the EARTH? • A globe is a model of Earth. The Earth is huge and is in space while a globe can be held in your hands.

  41. How did the COMPASS ROSE get its name? • The original compass had 32 points on it. A perfect rose has 32 petals. So, the compass on a map was named a compass rose. • What are the CARDINAL DIRECTIONS? • North, South, East, West • What are the INTERMEDIATE DIRECTIONS? • Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast
