The assessment for this module requires the students to plan and conduct (on a small scale) a survey to measure attitude or opinion. The students can choose any topic as long as it concerns measuring opinion. Questionnaire and Data Analysis
Examples of chosen topics Measuring attitude towards: • Speed cameras • GM foods • The smoking ban • Extended licensing hours • Smacking children • Peer to peer downloading
The assessment is divided into two pieces of coursework: Plan the survey and submit a research proposal form. Carry out a small scale survey and submit a report detailing the results and conclusions. Questionnaire and Data Analysis
Planning the Survey There is a lot to consider at the planning stage: • Aims and objectives • Questions that you want to answer • The target population and how to find them • A suitable sampling strategy • How to collect the responses
Poor planning will often lead to poor results that are unable to answer the questions that need answering. By requesting the students to complete a survey proposal they are encouraged to carefully consider the necessary planning. Planning the Survey
The questionnaire designed by the student will allow them to quantify opinion and each individual will have an attitude score. The scores are then analysed to see not only what the general attitude is, but also what factors affect opinion or attitude. Conducting the Survey
All analysis of the data is carried out using a statistical package called SPSS. The output generated from SPSS will allow the students to present their data effectively and carry out necessary tests of hypotheses to answer important questions. E.g. Do men and women have the same attitude? Analysis
Finally the students write up their results and submit a report incorporating SPSS output. It is important to be able to communicate the results in a way that non-statisticians will understand. The Report
