  1. Prometheus

  2. One of the sons of Iapetus, a wise Titan, Prometheus’s name means forethought.

  3. Prometheus had two brothers: Epimetheus, whose name means after-thought, and Atlas .

  4. When it was time for living things to be created, the gods gave the task to Epimetheus. Epimetheus gave all the good gifts to animals: speed, strength, feathers, wings, shells

  5. When he got to man, he realized he had nothing left to give. In a panic he called Prometheus.

  6. Prometheus gives man fire

  7. Prometheus then shaped man nobler, like the gods and stole fire from Olympus to give to men as a protection and way to make crafts and weapons.

  8. Zeus is not happy and he demands men sacrifice to the gods

  9. Prometheus devises a trick to deceive Zeus

  10. Uh oh….. He sacrificed an ox, and divided the pieces into two piles – but did not divide the meat equally

  11. The flesh and the rich and fatty innards were wrapped in the ox hide, and he wrapped the bones of the ox in white fat. Zeus had to choose which one he wanted….

  12. Zeus chose wrong! From then, for his sacrifice, he had to take the fat and bones of the animals, while the people got meat and flesh to themselves.

  13. Now he was really angry, so he came up with a way to get even.

  14. He had Hephaestus make the first woman and called her Pandora (the gift of all). She was also given a box in which each god gave something horrible. She was told never to open the box.

  15. Zeus sent her to Epimetheus, who gladly accepted her, although Prometheus warned him not to.

  16. Pandora of course opened the box and released all the evils on the world. Only one good thing was in the box—Hope.

  17. Zeus was still mad so he had his servants Force and Violence drag Prometheus away and chain him on the Caucasus Mountains.

  18. Zeus not only wanted to punish Prometheus but also to find out a secret he had. Prometheus knew who the mother of a son who would dethrone Zeus would be. So Zeus sent Hermes to make Prometheus tell the secret. Hermes warned him Zeus would punish him further.

  19. Everyday Zeus sent his eagle to eat Prometheus’ s liver.

  20. Much later Hercules comes and kills the eagle and rescues Prometheus.

  21. Another story: Men grew so evil that Zeus decided to destroy all of mankind. He and Poseidon created a great flood that covered all the earth except the top of Mt. Parnassus.

  22. One man and one woman were saved: The son of Prometheus, Deucalion, and his wife Pyrrha the daughter of Epimetheus and Pandora. Prometheus had told his son to build a chest, put provisions in and to stay in this during the flood.

  23. When the flood was over, Deucalion and Pyrhha landed at Mr. Parnassus. There they worshiped in a slimy temple and prayed for help.

  24. A voice told them to throw the bones of their mother over their shoulders. They decided this meant to take rocks and throw those—they did and men and women arose from these.
