Name:_______________________________ 6th Grade Math- Unit 8 Measurement: Capacity, Weight, Time, Temperature This unit bundles student expectations that address capacity, weight, time, temperature, and volume to extend student understanding of measurement. Prior to this unit, in Grade 5 Unit 09, students performed simple conversions within the same measurement system (SI (metric) or customary); connected models for perimeter, area, and volume with their respective formulas; and solved problems involving changes in temperature and elapsed time. In Grade 6 Unit 01, students were introduced to integers which were identified in real-life situations, articulated using quantifying descriptors, and expressed in a numerical expression. In Grade 6 Unit 07, students explored measurement relationships within formulas for perimeter, area, and circumference. During this unit, students continue to develop important aspects of measurement, which include standard measurement conversions, capacity, weight, and volume. In addition, students further their initial understanding of measurements and integers to represent relative changes or values within the context of time and temperature. Students continue the study of time from Grade 5 by determining elapsed time, a beginning or ending time, and conversions of second, minutes, and hours. After this unit, in Grade 7 Unit 08, students will estimate measurements and solve application problems involving volume of prisms and cylinders, as well as transition to a simplified formula for volume. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6.4B: The student uses letters as variables in mathematical expressions to describe how one quantity changes when a related quantity changes. The student is expected to: Convert measures within the same measurement system (customary and metric) based on relationships between units.

Step 2: Move the decimal left or right stopping on the right of the desired unit. Be sure to count how many places you move!   7. Conversion How to convert in the customary system: Set up a proportion! The first ratio should be what you know from the problem. The second ratio should be what you know from the Math Chart. Example: 56 ft = _________ in. = Set up the proportion 56 . 12 = x . 1 Cross multiply 675 = x . 1 675 ÷ 1 = 675 Divide 56 ft = 675 in.
