Welcome to our 3rd Grade Math session on December 14th! We aim to enhance your comfort with the new math curriculum. Today, we will overview our methodology based on Common Core State Standards, emphasizing Investigations designed for deeper mathematical understanding. Expect 10-minute daily activities promoting engagement and vocabulary enrichment. We will discuss homework practices, daily strategies for classroom reinforcement, and provide resources for home support. Let’s work together to ensure our children’s success in math!

Overview Thank you for joining us today! I’m so glad that you’re here and I hope that you leave feeling much more comfortable with the new Math in 3rd grade! Here’s what to expect from our session today: • Introduction • Methodology (standards) • Station Time • Resources
Introduction to Investigations In the Investigations and the Common Core State Standards it states: • Investigations was intentionally designed and sequenced to promote a deeper understanding of mathematics • Each unit builds on the previous unit • Provides additional content that align with the Common Core State Standards
Introduction to Investigations Investigations consists of: • 10-minute activities each day that address mathematical language, vocabulary, and strategies • Gives opportunities for students to share different levels of thinking • Deeper understanding of mathematical strategies by way of explanation
Methodology: Homework and Daily Practice • Homework is corrected and reviewed with children on an individual basis. • I keep control of homework turned in. • Homework will happen two or three times a week. • Daily practice sheets are done either the class as a whole or working in partners or small group. Children check each other for accuracy.
What are some of the strategies you can use at home that we use here in class? • Ask questions for clarification and understanding. • How did you solve this? • Show me your thinking. • Play many games at home that involve numbers. You will learn two today from the program. • They can use many tools to solve a problem: hundreds chart, coins, number lines, equations, decomposing a number in ones, tens, and hundreds, using multiples of ten, etc. • Talking about your strategy.

Resources There will be a packet full of useful information with the Math curriculum. This packet will include: • Resource sheet (websites, and other useful resources your child can access at home) • Survey to help us improve this event. Please send it back before December the 20th. • Station game pieces used today in our Math event • Collection cards • Hundreds chart • Recording sheet for all games • Game directions
