The Frisbee was invented 2,700 years ago. Well…not really! Discus throwing was a part of the early Olympic Games in Greece 2,700 years ago. And the design of the Frisbee disc is similar to the discus thrown in the Olympic Games. But the Frisbee is a Frisbee, not a discus. And the invention was not the result of some inventor staying up nights. The original Frisbee was spelled Frisbie and it was metal. It was not invented to be thrown-except into an oven. It was a pie tin stamped with the words “Frisbie Pies” since the pies came from the Frisbie Bakery in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Option One The Frisbie pie tins would probably have done nothing more than hold pies if it hadn’t been for some Yale University students. The Yale students bought Frisbie pies and once the pie was eaten, they began tossing the tins to each other. They would call out, “Frisbie!” to the person to whom they were tossing the pan, or to warn people walking nearby to watch for the flying objects. And so, intending simply to toss a pie tin back and forth, the Yale University students invented what has grown into the Frisbee we know today.
Option Two Frisbee pie tins probably would have just held pie if it weren’t for a girl and her dog. One day her family finished eating a pie from the Frisbie Bakery. Thinking the tin was useless, she tried to throw it away but her dog took it out of the trash and gave it to the girl. The girl decided to play with the dog and threw it in the air. He ran after it and caught it with his mouth. They made a game of it and it was really fun. Soon she started tossing it around with her friends. They would shout, “Frisbie Flying!” to tell people to watch out or duck.
Walter F. Morrison produced the first plastic models. The Wham-O Manufacturing Company of San Gabriel, California, began manufacturing Frisbee discs in the mid 1950s and since 1957 has made sixteen models. Now about thirty companies make flying discs.
There are flying disc clubs, tournaments, champions, a world association, and a publication just for flying disc enthusiasts. The National Frisbee Disc Festival is held each September. The Guinness Book of World Records reports that the record time for keeping a flying disc aloft was set by Don Cain on May 26, 1984, when he kept one in the air for 16.72 seconds. Disc play is good exercise. It’s fun. Its’ easy, yet challenging. It doesn’t cost much. And, best of all, it’s a sport you can enjoy with you favorite dog.
