  1. Polymer Chemistry Scott Schreffler Colin Wright April 27, 2007 Introduction to Chemistry Seminar

  2. Overview • Create and study polymers • Improve existing polymers to obtain certain properties • Modify techniques to control molecular structure to develop certain properties

  3. Job Functions and Activities • Producing new materials • Polymer chemists work in the adhesives, coatings, synthetic rubber, synthetic fibers, agricultural chemicals, packaging, automotive, aircraft, aerospace, and biomedical industries

  4. Places of Employment • Employed in industry, government, and academia • Most industry jobs are where products are made • Opportunities in industry exist in areas where adhesives, coatings, synthetic rubber, synthetic fibers, agricultural chemicals, packaging, automotive, aircraft, aerospace, and biomedical industries exist

  5. Personal Characteristics • Good laboratory skills needed • Good communication skills • Need to be able to communicate with those in other fields • Those interested in materials, the end use of polymers, and their synthesis are particularly well suited for this field • Best if you enjoy hands-on work instead of theoretical thinking

  6. Job Outlook • Polymer science is product oriented so hiring tends to follow the economy • Creative, well-trained individuals should be able to find positions • The starting salaries are • Bachelor's degree is $20,000 • Master's degree is $35,000 • Doctorate’s degree is $40,000

  7. Education and Training Requirements • Most polymer chemists have a Ph.D. and were trained as organic chemists • Communication skills • Computer skills needed may include: MS Word, MS Excel, and other more specific chemistry related programs

  8. Additional Information • chemistry.org • Information regarding polymer chemistry jobs • Wikipedia • Information regarding polymer chemistry itself • careerbuilder.com • Search for polymer chemistry jobs • Thingamajob.com • More polymer chemistry jobs
