  1. Polymer • Molecule made of many monomers bonded together • Also known as a Macromolecule

  2. Monomer • molecule that can bond to other similar molecules to form a larger molecule

  3. Macromolecule • A polymer with a high molecular mass; four groups within living things: carbohydrates, lipids, protein, nucleic acids

  4. Carbohydrates • A macromolecule that contains atoms of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in 1:2:1 ratio and serves as a major source of energy for living things

  5. Protein • A macromolecule that contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen; performs a variety of structural and regulatory functions for cells

  6. Peptide Bond • Type of bond connecting two amino acids to form a protein

  7. Lipids • hydrophobic macromolecule consisting of a long chain of carbon and hydrogen atoms

  8. Base • any compound that increases the number of hydroxide ions when dissolved in water; falls above 7 on the pH scale

  9. Acid • compound that forms hydrogen ions (H+) in solution; falls below 7 on the pH scale

  10. Dehydration Synthesis • a chemical reaction in which two or more molecules combine to produce water or another simple molecule

  11. Hydrolysis

  12. Catalyst • A substance that enables a chemical reaction to proceed at a faster rate by lowering activation energy

  13. Enzyme • A protein that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being changed by the reaction; organic catalyst

  14. Nucleotide • Monomer used to build nucleic acids (5 types)

  15. Nucleic Acid • A biological macromolecule (DNA or RNA) composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus that stores genetic information
