  3. Instruments • Ultrafast x-ray studies of laser-induced transient states of matter • Nano-particle and single-biomolecule (non-periodic) imaging • Nanoscale equilibrium dynamics in condensed matter • Soft x-ray imaging and dynamics

  4. Detector Development • LCLS experiments need new detector technology • Dual development strategy for fast 2-d detectors • Several technologies look promising, no clear leader • LCLS will pursue one strategy • MIE will try a different technology • Both prototypes should be ready by 2009

LCLS Detector Advisory Committee • Held first meeting Feb 28 - March 1, 2005 • Reviewed proposals for 2-d detector development • Based on their review, MIE has decided to collaborate with BNL on 2-d detector R&D, leading to at least one prototype detector in 2008-9 • LDAC will continue to review MIE and LCLS detector R&D • LCLS will hire a detector scientist to manage the efforts

Instrument MIE Phased Approach • First LCLS light may come in mid-2008 • Budget will not support building 4 instruments by 2008 • Phased approach • 2 instruments in phase 1 • sufficient functionality by mid-2008 to begin experiments • phase 1 instruments can support early work in all four areas • complete phase 1 while phase 2 is ramping up • remaining instruments in phase 2 • begin phase 2 after 2008 • complete all work in 2012

Physicists, Designer, Control Eng.) • By end of FY06: 6 more • Admin (Administrator, Database/Web Manager, QA Manager) • Engineering (second Designer, Programmer) Some of the Admin people are matrixed with other SLAC groups

Summary • The funding profile constraints on the instrument MIE project, along with the LCLS schedule, indicate that a phased approach is needed • Two instruments in Phase 1, two in Phase 2 • Detector development program in Phase 1 • Funding for this project is lean through FY06 • Overall funding through FY12 is adequate if profile is maintained • Rapid increase of staff in FY06, proximity to SSRL and other SLAC groups will help • Strong support from the Science Teams will be needed, good communication is a priority • Expect CD0 very soon, ready to start on CDR
