Apripoco • 1) Apripoco is Toshiba’s new prototype robot that acts as a universal remote in your house. Apripoco has sensors that pick up infrared signals, such as the one that comes off your TV remote. When you first use the remote in Apripoco’s presence he will ask you in a child like voice “What did you do now?”, after giving him the voice command he connects and remembers the infrared signal to do what you are asking him to do. Apripoco can use this information to turn on a TV but that is not all. Any thing use a infrared signal remote for can now be replaced with Apripoco because you are his teacher.http://www.robotorama.com/archives/2008/03/31/toshibas-apripoco/ • 2) This robot (Apripoco) is used in a common household or offices, or any other places. Its envelope is that he can turn on and off different things like lights, TV's, and computers. It can not do much else =, but it is helpful to every age that decides to use it. Here is a link to a video that demonstrates what Apripoco does. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5vJSVpmhLw • 3) Yes the robot is multifunctional. It can only turn on and off things as I said before yet it is also cute and and it can talk to you and answer questions that you ask like "where did you come from?” • 4-) Apripoco is taught to perform the tasks it can do by voice command. You can say whatever you want and it will or should have a response. • 5-) The sensors that Apripoco has are voice detection sensors that will detect your voice or any voice in reach and listen to the command it is told to do.
Apripoco Continued… • 6-) Some advantages to having a Apripoco is that you can do things like turning on and off the TV with not having to use a remote and just saying “Apripoco turn off the TV,” but there are some disadvantages with having an Apripoco because at points you are not sure if it will work and if it doesn’t work it will be a waste of money. • 7-) The impact that Apripoco could have on its audiences could be that it will make people more lazy than the human race is already by not having to be hands on with it all. • 8-) Apripoco can create jobs for more people to make more of them but, that is basically the only job that I can think of that will be provided by the robot. • 9-) I think that this robot can be made to perform more tasks by it being to be bigger and being able to probably being able to not just turn on and off the TV and lights but also be able to cook or do more household work than it already does. • 10-) "Toshiba's ApriPoco Demonstration - YouTube." The Hug • 1The robot is structured like the torso of a person, or a mannequin that a seamstress or tailor will use to make vests. When a person puts on the tactile vest and starts to hug or rub the Sense-Roid, it gets fed back to the user through the jacket. So, after your done hugging, it is almost like you were just hugging yourself. • 2This robot doesn’t have any degree of movement. It is held up on a stand to your heigh and stays still. The robot can be used anywhere, but most people use it at home. • 3No, this robot doesn’t have arm or legs, so unless they developed it more then it could be multifunctional. • 4When the user has the tactile vest on, so when the sensors on the robot connect with the vest sensors, it creates a stimulation, resembling a human hug. • 5When the vest connects to the robot, the robot senses it and has “muscles” that hug you back. These “muscles” are also made out of air pockets. • 6An advantage to this robot is that you get to hug yourself! This helps you when your lonely and during therapy, can calm you down. A disadvantage is that you aren’t really hugging a person, but a mannequin. Although it feels like a human hug, you aren’t really hugging a person.
The Hug Continued • 7Well, this robot can do more things than just stimulating a hug. From what his robot looks to do, it seems that by having a hug can boost your mood and heath; especially to a grandma or grandfather who lives alone. • 8This robot could help the old or help stressful people to relax with a hug to themselves. • 9This robot could be altered in the future so that it could have arms. If it had arms, then it would be able to connect more with the user and be like hugging an actual person. • 10All pictures from this site: "Sense-Roid Lets People Hug Themselves - DigInfo TV - Tech News Videos From Japan | The Latest Technology, Products, Gadgets and Scientific Research Direct from Tokyo." Wakamura • 1) This robot can call or email a certain person, hospital, or security firm. It can also access to the Internet, 24/7. • 2) The Wakamaru can be brought anywhere to be used, for one of its main purposes is to help the elderly, the disabled, or others that live independently. Most of its flexible joints are similar to a humans, except it doesn’t have legs, it has wheels instead, and it can swivel its “hands” all the way around. • 3) This robot is also programmed to help the elderly, the disabled, and others that live independently. • 4) Wakamaru can be taught to perform a task if you ask it to perform the task. You just have to ask, because since it has 24/7 access to the Internet, it can search how to do the task, and it does it. • 5) It is equipped with face and voice recognition capabilities that can allow the robot to follow and search for faces and movement. The sensors are located in the eyes and above the eyes, so it can look were it is going, and can see the people’s faces/movements. • 6) Some disadvantages are that the robot is only 3.3 feet tall, so it can’t reach high to retrieve something. However, a huge advantage is that when its batteries are running low, it recharges itself. It also doesn’t weigh much, only 60 pounds, so when you are traveling it can be easily picked up by a family member, neighbor, or human helper, and be put in the car. The Wakamaru also comes with a built-in-dictionary, so it is able to recognize 10,000 words.
Wakamura Continued • 7) This could have a huge impact on the people it could help, because if a working person were to own one, it would allow them to get the work done faster, therefore, being able to see their family more often. If an elder, disabled, or independent person were to own one, than they wouldn’t be lonely, first of all, and also it would allow them to get work done around the house without getting hurt, and without anyone’s help but their robot. • 8) The Wakamaru can create jobs for people, because everything eventually breaks. So the job can be to fix the robot. This would be one of the only jobs including with this robot, since this robot does most things on its own. • 9) This robot could be used eventually in the police office, because it can help search wanted criminals on the Internet, see where they were last seen, and go there without the humans getting hurt. The Wakamaru can than look at the faces and locate the criminal by comparing it to the picture found on the Internet. • 10)In this picture, the Wakamaru is aiding a girl. You can also see the size difference of this little girl and the robot (on website: http://teams.kipr.org/awards/05-0002/present.htm).
Conclusions • 1.Based upon the information shared in the presentations, which robot do you think will have the most significant impact on humans and why? • We think that the Wakamura will have the greatest impact on humans because we think it will be able to be more developed in the future and will be more interactive with humans. • 2.What concerns do you have about the future use of robots in our society? • They will over power us after making us lazier and might end up like the movie Wall-E. • 3. What do you think about “giving up” control to a machine? • It will help us in many ways, but might backfire and go out of of control on us and also for example we wouldn’t want a robot to do brain surgery on us because of the technical problems along the way.
