How do you feel about Eddie Lowery’s confession? Do you understand why he did it? 3. Based on this article, do you think false confessions are a common occurrence? Provide evidence.

  6. Literary Devices Defined (The Crucible) • Theme: the author’s comment on life or a particular subject or issue; NOT the plot; NOT one word • Characterization: the way an author creates a character in a story; indirect characterization (IC) is most used in plays and films; there are FIVE types of IC (remember STEAL) • Implicit: subtle, not obvious; might be left up to interpretation • Explicit: obvious; in your face, clear; not much (if any) interpretation needed

  7. Literary Devices Defined (The Crucible) Setting: time (year, time in history, season, date), location(s), Irony: a set of unexpected circumstances a. dramatic: audience knows…characters are unaware b. situational: c. verbal: sarcasm; don’t mean what you say

  8. Literary Devices Defined (The Crucible) Symbol: a person, place, thing, or event that has meaning beyond its obvious meaning
