  1. Commas in a Series By: MaddieH & Emily d 8F English Mme. Doucett February, 2013

  2. What is a comma? What is a series? Commas are used to separate words that do not belong together. In speaking, we can keep words apart by pausing. In writing, we must use commas. A series is a list of three or more; • Nouns (a person, place or thing) • Verbs • Adjectives

  3. Main Rules: Use a comma after every item in a series except the last. Use commas after the adverbs first, second, third, and so on, when these adverbs introduce a series of parallel items. When two or more adjectives precede a noun, use a comma after each adjective except the last one.

  4. Use a comma after every item in a series except the last. • The items in a series may be single words, or phrases, or clauses. Examples : • Words : The bedroom walls were black, yellow, and red. • Phrases : The cat dashed out of the kitchen, out the door, and to the bird on the oak tree. • Clauses : How bunnies jump, how they eat, and how they survive in the winter are explained in this article.

  5. 2. Use commas after the adverbs first, second, third, and so on, when these adverbs introduce a series of parallel items. Example: • There are three ways to get a good mark: first, pay attention; second, take notes; third, study.

  6. 3. When two or more adjectives precede a noun, use a comma after each adjective except the last one. Example: • They drove away in a bright, shinny, expensive sports car. • Sometimes two adjectives are used together to express a single idea made up of two closely related thoughts. Adjectives so used are not usually separated by a comma. • When you say two adjectives together do not pause between. Example: • Our house is the little green one.

  7. Exercises • Add comma in the right spot. • This morning I woke up got dressed brushed my teeth and ate breakfast. • In fact the bus was full of people who got dressed who brushed their teeth and who ate breakfast this morning. • Going to school working at the dress shop and practicing her violin took up all of Gina's time. • My grandmother remembers World War II the Korean War the Vietnam War and the Gulf War.

  8. Create your own Make 1-3 sentences using commas in a series on a piece of paper, and switch with the person beside you to correct them. Try to make them ‘’Grade 8’’ sentences. Do not use the same type of sentences, so that they don’t become boring.
