  20. Question 17 What is the average length of the digestive system? • 2 feet • 5 feet • 16 feet • 30 feet

  21. Question 18 What do platelets do? • Clot Blood • Transmit messages • Transport oxygen to the cells • Fight off disease

  22. Question 19 What is the function of the immune system? • To take oxygen to the cells around the body • To protect from disease and illness • To control the conditions of your body using hormones • To provide structural support of the body

  23. Question 20 Short answer! In your science notebook, please take 1 minute to compose a 2-3 sentence to answer the following question. How are the muscular system and digestive system related?

  24. Answer—Question 20 Two possible connections: • The organs of the digestive system are made up of smooth muscle • The digestive system provides nutrients (which make energy along with oxygen) for the cells of the muscular system

  25. Question 21 What is the term used to describe the body’s ability to maintain internal conditions? • Balance • Homeostasis • Regulation • Sweating

  26. Question 22 Where is the pituitary gland located? • Next to the heart • In the throat • In the brain • On top of the kidneys

  27. Question 23 Which organ of the digestive system provides the majority of nutrient absorption? • Stomach • Large Intestine • Pancreas • Small Intestine

  28. Question 24 The ___________ is a large muscle that stretches to create room in the thoracic cavity for the lungs to expand. • Diaphragm • Ribs • Heart • Thoracic Muscles

  29. Question 25 What is the “control center” of the nervous system? • Heart • Brain • Lungs • Stomach

  30. Question 26 A(n) ______________ is a structure that is made up of two or more types of tissue that work together to carry out a function in the body. • Tissue • Cell • Organ • System

  31. Question 27 What is the function of the endocrine system? • To fight off infection and disease • To circulate blood through the body & bring oxygen to the cells • To remove waste • To control metabolic processes of the body by sending messages via hormones

  32. Question 28 What is the name of the inside of the bone that produces new blood cells? • Bone Marrow • Red Blood Centers • Platelets • Spongy Bone

  33. Question 29 Which is the largest internal organ in the human body? • Liver • Lungs • Brain • Heart

  34. Question 30 Short answer!!! In your science notebook, please take 2 minutes to write 3-4 sentence to complete the following prompt. The respiratory system and circulatory system are closely related because….

  35. Answer--Question 30 • Example Answer: • The respiratory system and circulatory systems are closely related because the respiratory system brings in oxygen and carbon dioxide into the body and into the lungs. The lungs (a organ included in both the respiratory and circulatory system) transfer oxygen molecules to the blood cells of the circulatory system and transport them throughout the body to individual cells. The cells transfer carbon dioxide molecules to the blood, which return it back to the lungs. These two systems depend completely upon one another.

  36. Question 31 Which of the following is NOT a part of the immune system? • Skin • Stomach Acid • Saliva • Esophagus

  37. Question 32 The organ pictured on the left is Stomach Large Intestine Pancreas Small Intestine

  38. Question 33 Which type of tissue carries electrical impulses from your brain? • Epithelial tissue • Muscle tissue • Nerve tissue • Connective tissue

  39. Question 34 What is the name of the organ that makes bile? • Liver • Pancreas • Small Intestine • Pituitary Gland

  40. Question 35 How do muscles help contribute to homeostasis? • They keep parts of the body together • The control the amount of water in the body • They help you move • They produce heat when they contract

  41. Question 36 What are alveoli? • A muscle that makes space for contracted lungs • Tiny air sacs in which oxygen is transferred into the blood stream • A special valve in the heart • None of the above

  42. Question 37 What is an example of mechanical digestion? • Bile breaks down fats • Stomach breaks down proteins • Teeth grind food into smaller pieces • Saliva changes starches to sugar

  43. Question 38 What is the name for a disease causing agent? • Antibody • Pathogen • Vaccination • Antibiotic

  44. Question 39 What is the function of the brain? • Pump blood • Produce hormones • It is the control center of the body • To make cells

  45. Question 40 Short Answer!!! Please take 1 minute to write a short answer (2-3 sentences) to the following question: How does the endocrine system help maintain homeostasis? Give a specific example.

  46. Answer—Question 40 The endocrine system helps maintain homeostasis because: • The endocrine system sends hormones throughout the body to control metabolic processes. Without these hormones, you would not live. • Some Examples: • Hormones control body temperature • Hormones tell you when you are hungry/full • Hormones regulate your blood sugar • Hormones can increase your heart rate in anxiety-filled situations, allowing more oxygen to reach your cells and giving you a burst of energy • Hormones regulate growth • Hormones regulate sexual development, allowing humans to reproduce

  47. Question 41 What is the name of the disease associated with problems with blood sugar regulation? (HINT: It has to do with the pancreas.) • Diabetes • Hemophilia • Insulin • Cancer

  48. Question 42 ________________ is a disease associated with the nervous system. • Tourette’s Syndrome • Hemophilia • Osteoporosis • All of the above

  49. Question 43 What is the function of the respiratory system? • To bring in oxygen and release carbon dioxide • To control your body • To pump blood • To break down food

  50. Question 44 What is the name of the large, bulbous organ located at the top of the picture to the right? • Stomach • Liver • Heart • Brain
