  2. The Adrenal Medulla gland is located anterior to the kidneys, surrounded by connective tissue also know as the Adrenal Cortex.

  3. Functions The adrenal medulla secretes adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine). It synthesizes, stores, and releases catecholamines which are defined as any class of aromatic amines that includes a number of neurotransmitters that derive from the amino acid tyrosine. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are triggered by nervous stimulation as a result of mental or physical stress.

Effects on the Body - Increase in the rate and strength of the heartbeat resulting in increased blood pressure. - Blood shunted from the skin and viscera to the skeletal muscles, coronary arteries, liver, and brain. - Rise in blood sugar. - Increased metabolic rate. - Bronchi dilate. - Pupils dilate. - Hair stands on end ("gooseflesh" in humans). - Clotting time of the blood is reduced. - Increased ACTH secretion from the anterior lobe of the pituitary.
