  2. Where are These Glands Located? • On top of the kidneys.

  3. Hormones Produced • Which hormones: • adrenaline (also called epinephrine) and • noradrenaline (also called norepinephrine) • These hormones are released directly into the bloodstream.

  4. Affect on Human Body • Nerves supplied by sympathetic nervous system. • Produces flight or fight response. • Increase blood pressure • Rise in blood sugar • Increased metabolic rate • Bronchi dilate • Pupils dilate • Hair stands on end ("gooseflesh" in humans)

  5. Why Important to Homeostasis • Not essential to life • Helps a person cope with physical and emotional stress

  6. Feedback Mechanisms • The medulla is regulated by nerve impulses from the hypothalamus. • Regulated by ANS • Positive Feedback from the Pituitary gland

  7. Antagonistic Hormones/Glands • E/NE (epinephrine and norepinephrine) will positively feedback to the pituitary • Increase the breakdown of POMCs into ACTH

  8. Overproduction and Overproduction of Hormones • UNDERPRODUCTION: If these steroids are not produced sufficiently and we got into an accident, we would never come out of shock and would die. • OVERPRODUCTION: Usually caused by tumors adrenal medulla that are also associated with dangerous levels of hypertension.

  9. How to Fix Adrenal problems • Surgery is usually the process to fix tumor problem. • Remove the tumor and all or part of the adrenal gland. • Adrenal replacement therapy.
