  2. Interviewer’s Introduction of his/her Role • My job is to help kids who have been abused. • My job is to help kids who have been hurt and to make sure that nobody hurts them anymore.

  3. Rapport & Narrative Building • What’s your name? • How old are you? • Do you have any brothers or sisters? • Do you have a pet? • Do you go to school? • What is your teacher’s name? • What is your favorite subject in school? • Did you ever get any bad grades in school?

  4. Truth/Lie questions (child < 9) • Do you know the difference between the truth and a lie? • What does it mean to tell the truth? • Give me an example of something that is the truth/a lie

  5. Truth/Lie question for preschoolers • (4 year old boy) If I said that you are a girl, would that be the truth or would that be a lie?

  6. Transitioning to abuse-related questions (prior to any disclosures during the forensic interview) • Do you know why you came to see me today? • Can you tell me why you came to see me today?

  7. Transitioning to abuse-related questions (child reportedly told her mother that daddy hurt her pee-pee, but child has not yet made any abuse disclosures to the forensic interviewer) • Did Daddy hurt your pee-pee on purpose or was it an accident? • Did Daddy hurt your pee-pee? • Did somebody hurt your pee-pee?

  8. Abuse-related questions (after 6 year old disclosed, “Daddy touched my privates” identified as penis) • How many times did Daddy touch your privates? • Did it hurt when Daddy touched your privates?

  9. Abuse-related questions (after 6 year old disclosed, “Daddy touched my privates” identified as penis) • Were you clothes off or on when Daddy touched your privates? • Did Daddy tell you not to tell anybody about him touching your privates? • Why did Daddy touch your privates? • Did Daddy give you any other bad touches?

  10. Abuse-related questions (after 7 year old girl alleged to the forensic interviewer that her bus driver ‘Bill’ had her suck his pee-pee and had her touch his pee-pee) • Where were you and Bill when he did that? • Did Bill always do that in the bus? • How many times did you suck Bill’s pee-pee? • Did Bill make you touch his privates one time or more than one time? • Why didn’t you tell anybody before about what Bill did? • What else did Bill do to you?

  11. During abuse-related questioning, child expresses concern that Daddy will get in trouble if child tells what happened • Don’t worry. I won’t tell anybody. It will be our little secret. • If Daddy did something wrong, he needs to be punished so he won’t do it again. • You have to tell me what happened or I won’t be able to help you.
