  1. 2、Properties of materials • Structure of matter • solid state • A solid is defined as that state which has a definite , long-range crystal structure, A crystal is an orderly array of particles such as atoms, molecules or ions. An atom is the smallest unit of an element, whereas a molecule is the smallest unit of a compound. An ion is a particle containing an electrical charge.

  2. liquid state • Liquid lack a definite long-range crystal structure. Instead , their particles are arranged randomly. Remember that atom are in constant motion. • Nucleation of grains • When the temperature of a molten material is low- ered to the melting point, little crystals or nuclei are formed at many points in the liquid. This phenomenon is called nucleation.
