  2. Comma Rules • Use a comma when listing three or more things. Ex. He hit the ball, dropped the bat, and ran to first base. Ex. Please buy some ham, eggs, water, and fish. • Use a comma and a conjunction( and, but, for, nor, yet, or so) to connect sentences. Ex. Mother had a soft voice, but she somehow got people to do what she wanted. Ex. I needed to eat, but I had no time. • Use a comma between dialogue(speaker tag). Ex. “You know, I babysit, when their parents go out”, Matthew said. Ex. “We can’t get a job”, Matthew said. • Use a comma after a phrase that is different. Ex. The puppies were cute, but very messy. Ex. Some say the world will end in ice, not fire.

  3. What is a comma? • A comma is a punctuation mark. It is usually used for the date, listing words in a sentence, writing numbers. Also used as, speaker tags, and to separate actions.

  4. What can you compare the comma in the real world? • We can compare the comma to a lunch tray. For example, it separates food on a tray, like the comma separates words on a sentence. • Also to a yellow light. For example, it gives you notice that its time to slow down, just how a comma slows the reader down.

  5. Where would you see a comma in the real world? • Advertisements( Ex. Water bottles, billboards etc.) • TV • Test/quiz • Homework • ELA • Menu • Newspapers/magazines • City and State • Shirts

  6. Why would you use a comma? • You would use the comma to pause but keep going so the sentence doesn’t turn into a “run-on sentence”. • You would also use the comma to pause and let the reader take a breath, or to let the reader have a moment to think of what they just read. Authors/ Poets do this in their poems, articles, stories etc…

  7. Examples of the comma • Today's date is May 6, 2010. • “ I’m not ready yet,” she said. • She wrote 1,500 on the board. • He has a dog, cat, hamster, and bird.

Misuses of the comma. • Don’t use the comma after any punctuation mark- I am third., • Don’t use a comma before the first item in a list.- I brought a, sandwich, apple juice, orange, and yogurt. • Don’t use a comma when the word “and” joins a sentence- Father would encourage us to speak out, and let each voice in the family to be heard. • Don’t use a comma to separate a noun and an adjective, when the adjective comes before the noun. - The bright, red, car was a Toyota. - The long yellow, pencil was Victoria’s.
