Addressing Virus Risks in RFID Chips: Ethical Solutions for Livestock and Pets

DESCRIPTION

Amanda Stephenson explores the potential virus risks associated with RFID chips, commonly used for identifying livestock and pets. The discussion emphasizes the ethical decision-making process for ensuring these chips are safe for use. Three solutions are proposed: eliminating RFID chips, culling infected animals, or ensuring all chips are virus-free before use, with a focus on the best option that minimizes harm. The Pragmatist philosophy underscores the importance of achieving the highest quality and effectiveness in professional practices while adhering to ethical standards outlined in the ACM Code.

  1. Viruses in RFID Chips By: Amanda Stephenson

  2. RFID • RFID – Radio Frequency Identification tags • Hold 128 characters • Normally placed in livestock and pets for identification • Chips can now spread viruses

  3. Ethical Decision Making Process • The problem is that these RFID chips can potentially have viruses on them • People and the programmers who use and make the chips would like to make sure they’re safe. • a. Get rid of RFID chips. (Extreme) b. Kill the livestock and pets who have the chips. (Extreme) c. Make sure all chips don’t have viruses before use. (Best) • Yes this solution could be used by everyone. It treats peoples as means instead of means.

  4. Ethical Decision Making Process • This solution is not really in accord with what is natural because you’re still inserting animals with chips. This solution is fair and not excessive on either end of the spectrum. • Yes there’d be majority agreement that it’s the most efficient and it’d produce the greatest good for the greatest number of people. • Yes I feel strongly about the solution to take precautions with these chips. • The Pragmatist philosophy was the most influential in this solution.

  5. ACM Code • By applying the ACM code the RFID chips should not harm others. With the RFID chips having computer viruses they could possibly harm the pets and livestock. Also by making sure that the chips don’t have viruses before use, members are striving to achieve the highest quality, effectiveness and dignity in both the process and products of professional work.
