Trends and Key Issues in Reading: NAEP Scores from 1971 to 1999

This report analyzes national trends in reading scores among 9, 13, and 17-year-olds from 1971 to 1999, based on data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). It highlights significant increases in average scores for 13 and 9-year-olds during the 1970s, with scores fluctuating since 1980. While 17-year-olds showed a slight increase, it wasn't statistically significant. The findings illustrate the changes in student reading performance over nearly three decades and their implications for educational policy.
