  3. Attendance • Attendance is very important, even in Kindergarten. • Kindergarten builds a very important foundation for the following years to come.

  4. Kindergarten Curriculum • Reading: Houghton Mifflin • Letters and their sounds • 30 word wall words (more will be explored) • 10 word families (curriculum requirement, but we will explore more) • Reading skills (identifying story details, predicting, problem/solution, asking questions, making connections with the text) • Sight word and word family phonics books

  5. Kindergarten Curriculum • Math- 4 units • Topics from all 4 units are taught each trimester • Counting, Cardinality, Operations, and Algebraic Thinking with Numbers to 10 • Measurement and Data • Counting, Cardinality, Operations, and Algebraic Thinking with Numbers to 20 • Geometry

  6. Kindergarten Curriculum • Writing: Kid Writing • There are several stages in Kid Writing. • Scribble Writing ( ) • Letter Strings (ekidkiels) • Inventive or Phonetic Spelling (hom for home) • Conventional Spelling • Some of these stages may intermingle!

Routines • Session Hours: AM Kindergarten 8:35-11:25 PM Kindergarten 12:30-3:25 • School bags: Send to school everyday. • Please label bags and jackets/sweatshirts • Daily snack: No snack unless requested by teacher due to the limited amount of instructional time. • Birthday Celebrations: No food treats. Goodie bags with toys, pencils, erasers etc. are other options if you prefer to send something. (Please don’t feel obligated)

  10. Routines • Transportation: • Send me a note in your child’s “Bee” folder if he/she is being picked up. I will make a note of it before sending it to the office so that I know where to send your child at the end of the day. • If you send a note with an older sibling, please also inform me because I need to know where to send your child at the end of their school day. • AM Pick-up- your child will meet you in the office • PM Pick-up- your child reports to the library first and then they will meet you in the gym

Routines • Excuse notes for Absences: • Please send an excuse note in when your child returns to school after being absent. • Excuse note forms were included in the first day packet of papers. • If you need additional forms, please let me know. • You may also just write a note if you don’t have the form. Specify the date(s) of absences. • Excessive absences will receive notes from the school office explaining court proceedings.

  12. Routines • 2 hour (emergency) Delayed Start • AM - Start at 10:30 am - Buses pick up 2 hours later than usual. Finish at 12:25 pm - Buses discharge 1 hour later than usual. • PM - Start at 1:30 p.m. - Buses pick up 1 hour later than usual. Finish at 3:20 pm - Buses discharge at usual time • 2 hour (planned) Early Dismissal • AM - Start at 8:35 am - Buses pick up at usual time. Finish at 10:25 am - Buses discharge 1 hour earlier than usual. • PM - Start at 11:30 am - Buses pick up 1 hour earlier than usual. Finish at 1:20 pm - Buses discharge 2 hours earlier than usual. PM Class only needs to pack a lunch on early dismissal days

  14. Home- School Communication • Weekly Homework Sheet • Help your child complete the day’s assignment and initial for the day when completed. Use another piece of paper if not enough room. • Tips for Homework • Try not to spell words for your child. • If directions say to “kid-write” encourage your child to stretch words out and listen for beginning and ending sounds. (Middle sounds are encouraged mid to end of year) • If your child has trouble stretching (sounding out) words, guide them as needed • Look over the entire homework sheet on Monday for reminders about the week.

Home- School Communication • Scholastic Book Clubs: • Monthly flyers will be sent home. • Online ordering is optional (but very convenient)  • Online ordering class code- MBK4T • First book order is in your child’s mailbox and due on September 26 - - - Please take this home with you tonight.

Parent Involvement • Volunteer opportunities • Parties, special activities, etc. • I will be using a website called “Sign-up Genius” for party supply donations • More information will be coming home in October • Working at home - cutting, tracing, etc. • PTFS: PARENTS & TEACHERS FOR STUDENTS • Become involved to help at special events like PTFS family nights, Kindergarten Easter Egg Hunt, Olympic Day, etc… • Special Talents- let me know!
