Can organisms live by themselves? • No, all organisms interact with other living and non-living parts of their environment • Ecology – the study of the interactions of organisms with one another and their environment • Organisms interact with 2 parts of their environments: • Biotic and abiotic factors

  3. What’s the difference between biotic and abiotic? • Biotic – all the living parts of the environment • Ex. Plants, decomposers, and other animals What are abiotic factors in this picture?

  4. What about abiotic factors? • Abiotic – all the non living parts of an environment • Ex. Soil, water, sun, air • Do biotic factors depend on abiotic? • No living organism can survive without abiotic factors

  5. What are the levels of the environment? All environments are organized into distinct layers depending on what they consist of Going from the smallest to largest: 1. Organism – one individual living thing ex. A deer

  6. 2. Population – group of organisms of the same species that live in a specific area ex. Herd of deer

  7. 3. Communities – all the populations of species that live in the same habitat and interact with each other • Ex. A forest of trees and deer

  8. 4. Ecosystems – community of organisms and their abiotic environments • Ex. Forest with deer and pond.

  9. 5. Biosphere – part of the earth where life exists • Ex. Artic, marine, freshwater, desert, rainforest
