  1. Chapter 9 Multimedia, Web Authoring, and More

  2. Multimedia • Multimedia integrates all kinds of information. Pages are linked by buttons. Story boards show logic, flow, and structure. Authoring programs create presentations. • Links and Buttons • Story boards • Multimedia Authoring Programs

  3. Links and Buttons • Links – connections to related information or websites • Buttons – Special areas on a page that you can make appropriate links and navigate through presentations to locate and discover information.

  4. Story Boards • Story boards are used in the early planning phases of multimedia projects. They are a tool to record the intended overall logic.

  5. Multimedia Authoring Programs • Special programs used to create multimedia presentations. They bring together all the video, audio, graphics, and text elements into an interactive framework.

  6. Web Authoring • Creating Web sites is called Web authoring. Graphical maps present overall site design. Web authoring programs support design and HTML coding. • Web Site Design • Web Authoring Programs

  7. Web Site Design • A web site is an interactive multimedia form of communication. To design a web site you must determine the content of the site. The overall site is represented in a graphical map

  8. Web Authoring Programs • Web authoring programs are typically used to create sophisticated commercial sites. They can be also called • Web authoring programs • HTML editors

  9. Graphics Programs • Desktop publishers mix text and graphics. Image editors modify bitmap image files. Illustrators modify vector files. Graphics suites bundle separate programs. • Desktop Publishing • Image Editors • Illustration Programs • Graphics Suites

  10. Desktop Publishing • These are programs that allow you to mix text and graphics to create publications of professional quality.

  11. Image Editors • Image Editors, also known as paint programs, are best usedto create and to modify bitmap image files. They are common and ideally suited to represent realistic images such as photographs

  12. Illustration Programs • Also known as draw programs. They are used to modify Vector Images. • Vector Images – an image composed of a collection of objects such as lines, rectangles, and ovals.

  13. Graphics Suites • Companies are now combining or building their separate graphics programs. These are called Graphics Suites. These help companies buy a larger variety of graphics programs at a lower cost than if purchased separately.

  14. Virtual Reality • Virtual reality creates simulated environments. VRML is a programming language to produce virtual reality applications. Virtual reality authoring programs are used to create applications.

  15. VRML • Virtual reality modeling language is used to create real-time animated 3-D scenes.

  16. Virtual Reality Authoring Programs • These programs are lower cost programs that help utilize VRML and are widely used to create Web-based virtual reality applications.

  17. Applications • Simulates importation experiences or training in environments such as • Aviation • Surgical Operations • Spaceship repair • Nuclear disaster cleanup

  18. Artificial Intelligence • Artificial intelligence attempts to simulate human thought processes and actions. Two areas are knowledge-based systems and robotics.

  19. Knowledge-Based (Expert) Systems • Are programs that duplicate the knowledge humans have for performing specialized tasks.

  20. Robotics • Robotics is the field of study concerned with developing and using robots. • Robots- are computer controlled machines that mimic the motor activities of humans. • Perception Systems: robots that imitate some of the human senses. • Industrial Robots: Used in factories to perform a variety of tasks. Used in auto plants and in the garment industry. • Mobile Robots: these robots act as transporters such as “mail mobiles.” They carry mail though an office. Also used in military and police activity.

  21. Project Management • Project management software allows you to plan projects, schedule people, and control resources.

  22. Project Managers • These are programs designed to assist in planning, scheduling, and controlling the people, resources, and costs needed to complete a project on time.

  23. Gantt Charts • The Gantt chart uses bars and lines to represent a project.

  24. PERT Charts • A program Evaluation Review Technique chart uses boxes and lines to represent a project. A PERT chart shows not only the timing of a project but also the relationships among its tasks.
