Experiential avoidance, the tendency to evade emotional experiences, can have detrimental effects on mental health. Higher levels of experiential avoidance are linked to increased anxiety, depression, and overall psychological distress. Individuals with a history of sexual abuse, those engaging in high-risk sexual behavior, and those with substance abuse issues often exhibit greater experiential avoidance. Additionally, this avoidance is associated with symptoms of personality disorders, thought suppression, alexithymia, and anxiety sensitivity, highlighting its complex implications for mental well-being.
