Exploring Electronic Career Portfolios: A Guide for Students

Electronic Career Portfolios (ECPs) are organized collections that showcase students' accomplishments, skills, and experiences, both in and out of school. They allow students to document their journey in career development, providing a platform to conduct self-assessments, present exemplary projects, and reflect personally on their growth. ECPs facilitate career exploration and organization, helping students prepare for scholarship applications, job searches, and future educational pursuits. Using tools like Career Cruising, students can easily create and manage their portfolios online.

  1. Electronic Career Portfolios

  2. What is a Portfolio? • An organized collection of evidence that shows your accomplishments both in and out of school, • contains samples of your work that exhibit and reveal the quality and variety of your learning, your accomplishments, your skills, and your experiences. • Document your journey through the career development process. A student’s portfolio should contain information pertaining to self-assessment, showcase exemplary student products or projects, and reveal student personal reflections. According to Wonacott (2001).

  3. What are ECPs? • Electronic Career Portfolios are a way in which students can explore, document and store their career aspirations, strengths, interests, and accomplishments. • They are no different than the Career Portfolios of the past, except that you are putting all the information onto the computer to store and organize.

  4. Why bother? • Tool in which students can learn, discover and document their growth • Focuses students and allows them to think about their future • Gives the students a place to organize and keep all their accomplishments and career related information; great for referring to for scholarship applications, career research projects needed for certain post-secondary programs, job applications, creating résumés, etc. • Students are able to invite others to view their ECPs - employers, potential post-secondary institutions, etc.
