    4. U.S. crane accidents claim 50 lives every year. More than 500 US construction workers died in crane accidents between 1984 and 1994, according to a study of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

    5. Power line contact was by far the most common cause of accidents, accounting for 39 percent of all fatalities. Other major causes included assembly/dismantling (12 percent), boom buckling (8 percent), rigging failure (7 percent) and upset/overturn (7 percent).

    7. The existing OSHA standard does not specifically address hydraulic cranes because they were rare in the late 1960s. The prevalence of hydraulic cranes today is one reason operators no longer can rely on past experience and must be trained to understand the capability of the crane they are using. An OSHA official pointed out that the inspection of a hydraulic crane differs from that of the older machines, so this is another area the agency expects the new rule will take up.
