  4. Migrations Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) U.S. federal law that prevented most Chinese immigration regardless of origination. The act also prevented Chinese immigrants from obtaining U.S. citizenship. It had strong support from labor organization that felt Chinese immigrants allowed capitalists to keep wages low. The law was in effect until 1943. White Australia policy (1901) The discovery of gold in Australia in the 1850s led to large-scale immigration from China and the Pacific Islands. The Parliament of Australia passed an act that allowed immigration officials to exclude individuals on the basis of race (without that being the official reason).
