Tiananmen Square Massacre Students had gathered in Tiananmen Square in Beijing to protest for democracy; April 1989 As the protests gained popular support, thousands of students started a hunger strike to emphasize their protests. The number of protesters grew to over 100,000 people, and Deng ordered troops into Beijing and declared martial (military) law. After the declaration of martial law, the number of protesters shrank to 5000 who refused to leave. On 4 June 1989, the troops opened fire on the protesters killing hundreds and wounding thousands.
