History of National History Day • Established in 1974 • Began as a local contest at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio • Became a national program in 1980 • With support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, NHD expanded during the 1980s and 1990s.

Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History • Each year there is a “theme” • Topic must relate to the “theme” • Topic must be a US History topic • Topic must be approved by teacher • There are two types of topics: • Goal: Get an “A” on the project • Goal: Get an “A” and make it to Nationals

Research! Research! Research! • Research trips to KU: -Wednesday, October 12 -Thursday, October 13 -Both trips are during the school day from 8:00 to 2:45. We will travel by bus to KU’s Watson Library. -The kids will need money for lunch and any copies that they make.
First Semester Deadlines • 10 sources due Oct. 3 • 20 (total) sources dues Nov. 14 • 30 (total) sources due December 12 • Annotated Bibliography due: • Dec 13 (hrs 4 and 8) • Dec 14 (hr 1)
Annotated Bibliography • The students will utilize “NoodleTools” • NoodleTools is an online service • The annotated Bibliography is worth 200 points !
Organizational Outline of History Day Project • Introduction -Thesis Statement • Historical Background -Place the topic in historical context • Main Event • Short Term Consequences -From the time of the event up to 10 years • Long Term Consequences -From 10 years after the event to today • Conclusion -Draw conclusions, analyze, interpret information
Second Semester Deadline • Final Projects are due Monday, February 14th • No Exceptions!! • 10% off for every day late including weekends • Worth 300 points!
How the Project is Graded(Refer to Rhubric handout) • 60% Historical Quality • 20% Relationship to the Theme • 20% Organization, Aesthetics, etc.
How Can You Help? • Make sure the work is the work of the child. • Make sure your child is excited about their topic. • The main goal should be the process and learning knowledge and skills. • Assist your child. Adults can help students locate materials, but students should take notes, etc. • Be aware of the deadlines. • Provide transportation for research trips. • Contact Mrs. Sittenauer (email is best) with ANY questions. • Help at B-Ball concessions • #1 IMPORTANT ROLE - Give encouragement, support and guidance!!
