History • 1980’s : • Established National Computerization Agency (NCA) • Established the Secretariat of the National Basic Information System Steering Committee • Formulated the Mid/Long term Plans for National Computerization • 1990’s : • Initiated of the Plan for Building the Korea Information Infrastructure (KII) • Designated as the chief managing body for KII projects • 2000~present : • Implemented 31 e-Government Roadmap Projects • Established IT Cooperation Center (Chile-Korea, Mexico-Korea) • Designated as the chief managing body of Korea’s e-Government Project • Supported Broadband Convergence Network (BcN) Projects • Completed u-Korea Master plan (with the Ministry of Information and Communication) • Agency name changed to National Information Society Agency (NIA)

Mission One Establish Global Best u-IT Infrastructure Mission Two Support e-Government Construction Mission • BcN (Broadband Convergence Network) Construction - Pilot Services provided by 4 consortia to 2,800 households • IPv6 Deployment - Technical assistance to the public sector (Seoul City, Ministry of National Defense, etc…) • Bridging the Digital Divide - Full broadband coverage by 2007, Wholesale Internet access prices for schools and non-profit organizations • e-Government Projects - Implementation of the 31 e-Government Roadmap Projects (2nd Gov’t Consolidated Data Center, Development of advanced Internet civil affairs services, etc…) • Policy Planning for e-Government Implementation - Revision and performance evaluation of the e-Government Implementation Roadmap • Public Administration Information DB Construction - 25 Projects to digitalize administrative data and records

Mission Mission Three Promote ICT Enablement of SMEs and New Technologies • Promote and Support Application Service Provider (ASP) usage by SMEs - No. of SMEs using ASP: 560,000 (’05) -> 670,000 (’06.6) • Create favorable Environment for RFID/USN - Pilot Projects to create initial market demand (Mobile RFID, etc…) • Promote Digital Home –Service commercialization, Home Network Building Certification System • Telematics, URC (Ubiquitous Robotics Companion) Pilot Projects Mission Four Support Ubiquitous Policy and Strategy Development • u-Korea Policy - Establishment of the u-Korea Master Plan - u-Korea Planning Committee: Formulate mid-to-long term implementation Strategy • Examine and Analyze future u-Society and research strategies • Analyze informatization statistics and Develop international IT index
