  3. What affects your choices? • Personal Reasons • Family/Friends • Cost • Salesperson • Advertising Types of Advertisements • Informational • Image Ads: “If you buy this product, this can be you!” Techniques • Bandwagon • Attractive People/Celebrity

How children are affected: How Children are Affected: • Advertising/marketing contributes to 15% of U.S children ages 7-17 being overweight. • “70% of food product commercials advertise for high-sugar, high-fat foods.” • Most children under 8, don’t realize that commercials are trying to persuade you to buy a product. • Healthy foods vs. fast food advertising • The grocery store shelves • Including games/website codes

  5. Why children choose products • Animals cartoon characters, celebrities • Colorful, fun backgrounds • Adding games, e-cards, toys,website codes, prizes • Using opinions and not facts • Catchy slogan, phrases

How can you be a responsible consumer? • Recognize the difference between your needs and wants. • Don’t believe what you see on the television or other media. • Research the product/service before you spend your money. Parents ask Children: • What do you like about that? • Do you think it’s really as good as it is in the ad? • Do you think that’s a healthy choice? *Discuss with children the goals of advertisers *Encourage children to stay away from the television *Don’t let advertisements consume you!
