  2. Now which tense… • J’ai regardé la télé hier soir • Je regardais la télé • Je regarde la télé • Je regarderais la télé • J’avais regardé télé • Je vais regarder la télé • Je regarderai la télé

  4. The Passive Voice When the subject of the sentence has the action of the verb done to it!

  5. Find the subject of this sentence… The cat sat on the mat subject

  6. Now find the verb The cat sat on the mat verb subject The cat is doing the action of the verb

  7. Now find the object The cat sat on the mat verb object subject The mat is having the action done to it.

  8. But what if the mat was the subject of the sentence? The mat was eaten by the cat verb subject The mat is having the action done to it instead of doing the action!

  9. This is when we use the passive voice.But how do we form it? • We use être and a past participle, which agrees with the subject Les bléssés sont transportés à l’hôpital verb subject The injured are taken to hospital

  10. Choose the right answer… • Martine was 18 when she was given this car A) Martine avait 18 ans lorsqu'on lui a donné cette voiture B) Martine avait 18 ans lorsqu'elle a donné cette voiture

  11. Choose the right answer… • She was told it would be expensive A) Elle a dit que cela serait cher B) On lui a dit que cela serait cher.

  12. You can use the passive in different tense by changing the auxiliary être to the appropriate tense. • FUTURE • Les élèves seront aidés par une assistante. • The pupils will be helped by an assistant.

  13. Perfect • Les élèves ont été aidés par une assistante. • The pupils have been helped by an assistant

  14. Imperfect • The pupils were being helped by an assistant • Les élèves étaient aidés par une assistante.

  15. Pluperfect • The pupils had been helped by an assistant • Les élèves avaient été aidés par une assistante.

  16. You can avoid using the passive by using “on” • On transporte les bléssés à l’hôpital • you simply blame an invisible “one” and make them the subject of the verb.
